thou shalt give him his hire, neither shall the sun go down upon it; for he is poor, and setteth his heart upon it: lest he cry against thee unto the Lord, and it be sin unto thee. Q. 102. Did Job slight the complaints of his servants? Job, xxxi. 13, 14, 15.

A. If I did despise the cause of my manservant or of my maidservant, when they contended with me; what then shall I do when God riseth up? and when he visiteth, what shall I answer him? Did not he that made me make him? and did not one fashion us?

Q. 103. Should not masters be just and equal to their servants? Colossians, iv. 1-Ephesians, vi. 9.

A. Masters, give unto your servants that which is just and equal; knowing that ye also have a Master in heaven. And, ye masters, do the same things unto them, forbearing threatening; knowing that your master also is in heaven; neither is there respect. of persons with him.

Q. 104. What advice doth the apostle give to servants? Ephesians, vi. 5, 6, 7.

A. Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds.

Q. 107. What saith David of those who tell lies? Psalm ci. 7.

A. He that worketh deceit shall not dwell within my house: he that telleth lies shall not tarry in my sight. Q. 108. What saith Solomon concerning a faithful witness? Proverbs, xiv. 5-xix. 9.

A. A faithful witness will not lie: but a false witness will utter lies. A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaketh lies shall perish.

Q. 109. Will God's children tell lies? Isaiah, Ixiii. 8. A. For he said, Surely they are my people, children that will not lie: so he was their Saviour.

Q. 110. What saith Solomon of a lying tongue? Prov. xxvi. 28-x. 18.

A. A lying tongue hateth those that are afflicted by it; and a flattering mouth worketh ruin.

He that hideth hatred with lying lips, and he that uttereth a slander is a fool.

Q. 111. What saith Jonah of those that observe lying vanities? Jonah, ii. 8.

A. They that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy.

Q. 112. What saith David of flattering lips? Psa. xii. 2, 3, A. They speak vanity every one with his neighbour: with flattering lips and with a double heart do they speak. The Lord shall cut off all flattering lips, and the tongue that speaketh proud things.

A. If a false witness rise up against any man, to testify against him that which is wrong; if the witness be a false witness, then shall ye do unto him as he had thought to have done unto his brother: so shalt thou put the evil away from among you.

A. Let me not, I pray you, accept any man's person, neither let me give flattering titles unto man. For I know not to give flattering titles; in so doing my maker would soon take me away.

OF GOVERNING THE TONGUE.

Q. 121. Is not that man's religion vain who does not bridle his tongue? James, i. 26.

A. If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man's religion is vain.

Q. 122. May we talk foolishly and jest one with another? Ephesians, v. 3, 4.

A. But all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints; neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient but rather giving of thanks.

Q. 123. Doth not Christ say, that men shall give an account of every idle word? Matthew, xii. 36.

A. I say unto you, that every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.

Q. 124. What saith the apostle of corrupt communication? Ephesians, iv. 29.

A. Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.

OF ANGER, WRATH, AND MALICE.

Q. 130. Should we not put away bitterness, wrath and anger? Ephesians, iv. 31.

A. Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice. Q. 131. What saith the Scripture of being slow to wrath? Proverbs, xiv. 29-James, i. 19-Prov. xxv. 28. A. He that is slow to wrath is of great understanding; but he that is hasty of spirit exalteth folly.

Let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to

wrath.

He that hath no rule over his own spirit, is like a city that is broken down, and without walls.

Q. 132. Doth not confusion proceed from envy strife? James, iii. 16,

A. Where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.

Q.133. Is it not an honour to cease from strife? Proverbs, xx. 3.

A. It is an honour for a man to cease from strife: but every fool will be meddling.

A. The discretion of a man deferreth his anger; and it is his glory to pass over a transgression.
