thou shalt give him his hire, neither shall the sun go down upon it; for he is poor, and setteth his heart upon it: lest he cry against thee unto the Lord, and it be sin unto thee. Q. 102. Did Job slight the complaints of his servants? Job, xxxi. 13, 14, 15.

A. If I did despise the cause of my manservant or of my maidservant, when they contended with me; what then shall I do when God riseth up? and when he visiteth, what shall I answer him? Did not he that made me make him? and did not one fashion us?

Q. 103. Should not masters be just and equal to their servants? Colossians, iv. 1-Ephesians, vi. 9.

A. Masters, give unto your servants that which is just and equal; knowing that ye also have a Master in heaven. And, ye masters, do the same things unto them, forbearing threatening; knowing that your master also is in heaven; neither is there respect. of persons with him.

Q. 104. What advice doth the apostle give to servants? Ephesians, vi. 5, 6, 7.

A. Servants, be obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as unto Christ: not with eye-service, as men-pleasers; but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart; with good will doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men.

Q. 105. What saith the apostle to Timothy concerning servants? 1 Timothy, vi. 1.

A. Let as many servants as are under the yoke, count their own masters worthy of all honour.

OF LYING AND FLATTERING.

Q. 106. Should we not avoid lying? Ephesians, iv. 25

A. Wherefore, putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour; for we are members one of another.

Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds.

Q. 107. What saith David of those who tell lies? Psalm ci. 7.

A. He that worketh deceit shall not dwell within my house: he that telleth lies shall not tarry in my sight. Q. 108. What saith Solomon concerning a faithful witness? Proverbs, xiv. 5-xix. 9.

A. A faithful witness will not lie: but a false witness will utter lies. A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaketh lies shall perish.

Q. 109. Will God's children tell lies? Isaiah, Ixiii. 8. A. For he said, Surely they are my people, children that will not lie: so he was their Saviour.

Q. 110. What saith Solomon of a lying tongue? Prov. xxvi. 28-x. 18.

A. A lying tongue hateth those that are afflicted by it; and a flattering mouth worketh ruin.

He that hideth hatred with lying lips, and he that uttereth a slander is a fool.

Q. 111. What saith Jonah of those that observe lying vanities? Jonah, ii. 8.

A. They that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy.

Q. 112. What saith David of flattering lips? Psa. xii. 2, 3, A. They speak vanity every one with his neighbour: with flattering lips and with a double heart do they speak. The Lord shall cut off all flattering lips, and the tongue that speaketh proud things.

Q. 113. Doth he not desire to be delivered from lying lips? Psalm cxx. 2, 3,

A. Deliver my soul, O Lord, from lying lips, and from a deceitful tongue. What shall be given unto thee? or what shall be done unto thee, thou false tongue? Sharp arrows of the mighty, with coals of juniper.

Q. 114. Should a ruler hearken to lies? Prov. xxix. 12. A. If a ruler hearken to lies, all his servants are wicked. Q. 115. What was to be done by the law of Moses unto a false witness? Deuteronomy, xix. 16, 18, 19.

A. If a false witness rise up against any man, to testify against him that which is wrong; if the witness be a false witness, then shall ye do unto him as he had thought to have done unto his brother: so shalt thou put the evil away from among you.

Q. 116. What saith Elihu of giving flattering titles? Job, xxxii. 21, 22.

A. Let me not, I pray you, accept any man's person, neither let me give flattering titles unto man. For I know not to give flattering titles; in so doing my maker would soon take me away.

Q. 117. What were the two things for which Agur prayed? Proverbs, xxx. 7, 8.

A. Two things have I required of thee; deny me them not before I die: Remove far from me vanity and lies; give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food convenient for me.

Q. 118. Doth the word of God enjoin on us never to bear false witness? Exodus, xx. 16.

A. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neigh

bour.

Q.119. What said Christ to the Jews who called God their father, and yet continued in their wickedness? John, viii. 44.

A. Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do: he was a murderer from the beginning and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

Q. 120. Shall all liars have their portion in the lake that burneth with fire and brimstone? Revelations, xxi. 7, 8. A. He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son. But all liars shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone.

OF GOVERNING THE TONGUE.

Q. 121. Is not that man's religion vain who does not bridle his tongue? James, i. 26.

A. If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man's religion is vain.

Q. 122. May we talk foolishly and jest one with another? Ephesians, v. 3, 4.

A. But all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints; neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient but rather giving of thanks.

Q. 123. Doth not Christ say, that men shall give an account of every idle word? Matthew, xii. 36.

A. I say unto you, that every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.

Q. 124. What saith the apostle of corrupt communication? Ephesians, iv. 29.

A. Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.

Q. 125. Is it wisdom presently to utter one's mind? Proverbs, xxix. 11-xviii. 13.

A. A fooi uttereth all his mind: but a wise man keepeth it in till afterwards. He that answereth a matter before he heareth it, it is folly and shame unto him.

Q. 126. What saith Solomon of using a multitude of words? Proverbs, x. 19-xxi. 23.

A. In the multitude of words there wanteth not sin: but he that refraineth his lips is wise: Whoso keepeth his mouth and his tongue, keepeth his soul from troubles.

Q. 127. What saith Solomon of giving a soft answer? Proverbs, xv. 1.

A. A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger.

OF ANGER, WRATH, AND MALICE.

Q. 128. What saith Solomon of being slow to anger? Proverbs, xvi. 32.

A. He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city. Q. 129. May we be hasty in our spirits to be angry? Ecclesiastes, vii. 9.

A. Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry: for anger resteth in the bosom of fools.

Q. 130. Should we not put away bitterness, wrath and anger? Ephesians, iv. 31.

A. Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice. Q. 131. What saith the Scripture of being slow to wrath? Proverbs, xiv. 29-James, i. 19-Prov. xxv. 28. A. He that is slow to wrath is of great understanding; but he that is hasty of spirit exalteth folly.

Let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to

wrath.

He that hath no rule over his own spirit, is like a city that is broken down, and without walls.

Q. 132. Doth not confusion proceed from envy strife? James, iii. 16,

and

A. Where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.

Q.133. Is it not an honour to cease from strife? Proverbs, xx. 3.

A. It is an honour for a man to cease from strife: but every fool will be meddling.

Q. 134. What saith Solomon of deferring anger? Proverbs, xix. 11.

A. The discretion of a man deferreth his anger; and it is his glory to pass over a transgression.

Q. 135. What saith he of envy? Proverbs, xxvii. 4. A. Wrath is cruel, and anger is outrageous; but who is able to stand before envy?

OF THE FEAR OF GOD.

Q. 136. What did Solomon say was the whole duty of man? Ecclesiastes, xii. 13, 14.

A. Fear God, and keep his commandments; for this is the whole duty of man." For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.
