neither shall silver be weighed for the price thereof. The fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.

Q. 138. What is the beginning of true wisdom? Proverbs, ix. 10.

A. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; and the knowledge of the Holy is understanding.

Q.139. Are we not commanded to fear God? Deuteronomy, xiii. 4.

A. Ye shall walk after the Lord your God, and fear him, and keep his commandments, and obey his voice, and ye shall serve him, and cleave unto him.

Q. 140. What saith David of the fear of the Lord? Psalm xxxiv. 9, 10.

A. O fear the Lord, ye his saints: for there is no want to them that fear him. The young lions do lack, and suffer hunger: but they that seek the Lord shall not want any good thing.

Q. 141. Is the Lord gracious and merciful to those that fear him? Psalm ciii. 8, 11, 13, 15, 16, 17, 18.

A. The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy. For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that fear him. Like as a father pitieth his children, so the Lord pitieth them that fear him. As for man, his days are as grass: as a flower of the field, so he flourisheth. For the wind passeth over it, and it is gone; and the place thereof shall know it no more. But the mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear him, and his righteousness unto children's children; to such as keep his covenant, and to those that remember his commandments to do them.

Q. 142. Are they blessed who fear the Lord? Psalm cxxviii. 1, 2, 3, 4.

A. Blessed is every one that feareth the Lord, that walketh in his ways. For thou shalt eat the labour of thine hands: happy shalt thou be, and it shall be well with thee. Thy wife shall be as a fruitful vine by the sides of thine house: thy children like olive plants round

about thy table. Thus shall the man be blessed that feareth the Lord.

Q. 143. Should all fear God and stand in awe of him? Isaiah, viii. 13-Psalm xxxiii. 8, 9.

A. Sanctify the Lord of hosts himself; and let him be your fear, and let him be your dread.

Let all the earth fear the Lord: let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him. For he spake, and it was done: he commanded, and it stood fast.

Q. 144. What saith Solomon of humility and the fear of the Lord? Prov. xxii. 4-xiv. 26, 27—xv. 33-xxiii. 17. A. By humility and the fear of the Lord are riches, and honour, and life.

In the fear of the Lord is strong confidence; and his children shall have a place of refuge. The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death. The fear of the Lord is the instruction of wisdom; and before honour is humility. Let not thine heart envy sinners: but be thou in the fear of the Lord all the day long.

Q. 151. Are those people wise who are deceived by wine and strong drink? Proverbs, xx. 1-xxi. 17.

A. Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging; and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.

A. Who hath wo? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes? They that tarry long at the wine: they that go to seek mixed wine. At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder.

OF SWEARING.

A. Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
