thou goest. In the morning sow thy seed, and in the evening withhold not thy hand; for thou knowest not whether shall prosper, either this or that, or whether they shall be alike good. Be thou diligent to know the state of thy flocks, and look well to thy herds. He that tilleth his land shall be satisfied with bread; but he that followeth vain persons is void of understandingand shall have poverty enough. Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies. She seeketh wool and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands. She layeth her hands to the spindle, and her hands hold the distaff. She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness. Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.

LESSON 7.

Covetousness.

Labour not to be rich; cease from thine own wisdom. He that is greedy of gain troubleth his own house. They that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition: for the love of money is the root of all evil; which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt

not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his man servant, nor his maid servant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's. He that loveth silver shall not be satisfied with silver; nor he that loveth abundance with increase. Be not thou afraid when one is made rich, when the glory of his house is increased; for when he dieth he shall carry nothing away; his glory shall not descend after him. Sell that ye have, and give alms, provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens which faileth not; where no thief approacheth, neither moth corrupteth. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and raiment, let us be therewith content. They that trust in their wealth, and boast themselves in the multitude of their riches, none of them can redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him. The rich and poor meet together; the Lord is the maker of them all.

LESSON 8.

Sobriety and Temperance.

He that loveth pleasure shall be a poor man; he that loveth wine and oil shall not be rich. Even in laughter the heart is sorrowful; and the end of that mirth is heaviness. Who hath wo? Who hath sorrow? Who hath contentions? Who hath babbling? Who hath wounds without

cause? Who hath redness of eyes? They that tarry long at the wine, they that go to seek mixt wine. Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth colour in the cup, when it moveth itself aright. At the last it biteth like a serpent and stingeth like an adder. Be not amongst wine-bibbers; amongst riotous eaters of flesh. For the drunkard and glutton shall come to poverty, and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags. Whoso keepeth the law is a wise son: but he that is a companion of riotous men, shameth his father. The night is far spent, the day is at hand; let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light let us walk honestly as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying. Be not drunk with wine wherein is excess; but be ye filled with the Spirit. The grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men; teaching us, that denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in this present world. Let your moderation be known unto all men. Whether, therefore, ye eat or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.

Be not rash with thy mouth, and let not thine heart be hasty to utter any thing before God; for God is in heaven, and thou upon earth; therefore let thy words be few.

LESSON 9.

Forgiveness of Injuries.

Say not, I will do so to him, as he hath done to me; I will render to the man according to his work. Say not thou, I will recompense evil; but wait on the Lord, and he shall save thee. The discretion of a man deferreth his anger; and it is his glory to pass over a transgression. The merciful man doeth good to his own soul; but he that is cruel, troubleth his own flesh. Deceit is in the heart of them that imagine evil, but to the counsellors of peace is joy. Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice. And be ye kind one to another, tender hearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you. Agree with thine adversary quickly, whilst thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison. Ye have heard that it hath been said, thou shalt love thy neighbour and hate thine enemy. But I say unto you, love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you and persecute you; that ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven; for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and the good; and sendeth rain on the just, and on the unjust. For ye love them which love you, what reward have ye?

LESSON 10.

On Prayer.

[ocr errors]

And it came to pass, that as Jesus was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples. And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth. Give us day by day our daily bread. And forgive our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever: Amen. When thou prayest thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues, and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, they have their reward. But thou when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father, which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly. But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do; for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. Be not ye therefore like unto them; for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of before ye ask him. If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth unto all men liberally and upbraideth not. But let him ask in faith, nothing
