thou make in the ark, and shall pitch it within and without with pitch. And behold I, even I, do bring a flood of waters upon the earth, to destroy all flesh wherein is the breath of life from under heaven. But with thee will I establish my covenant, and thou shalt come into the ark, thou, and thy sons, and thy wife, and thy sons' wives with thee. And of every living thing of all flesh; two of every sort shalt thou bring into the ark, to keep them alive with thee: they shall be male and female. And Noah did according unto all that the Lord commanded him. And the waters prevailed exceedingly upon the earth; and all the high hills that were under the whole heavens were covered. Noah only remained alive, and they that were with him in the ark. And the waters prevailed upon the earth an hundred and fifty days. And God made a wind to pass over the earth, and the waters assuaged.

LESSON 24.

Noah and the Ark.

SECOND PART.

Noah opened the window of the ark which he had made, and he sent forth a raven, which went forth to and fro until the waters were dried up: also he sent forth a dove from him to see if the waters were abated. But the dove found no rest for the sole of her foot, and she returned.

And he stayed yet other seven days, and again he sent forth the dove out of the ark; and the dove came in to him in the evening, and lo, in her mouth was an olive leaf plucked off. SoNoah knew that the waters were abated from off the earth. And Noah built an altar unto the Lord, and offered burnt offerings. And the Lord smelled a savour, and the Lord said in his heart, I will not again curse the ground, for man's sake ; neither will I again smite any more every thing living, as I have done.

LESSON 25.

History of Babel.

The whole earth was. of one language, and of one speech. And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there. And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth. And the Lord came down to see the city and the tower. And the Lord said, Behold the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do. Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not un

derstand one another's speech. So the Lord scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth; and they left off to build the city.

LESSON 26.

Abraham and Isaac.

FIRST PART.

And

And Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran his son's son, and Sarai his daughter-in-law, his son Abram's wife; and they went forth with them from Ur of the Chaldees, to go into the land of Canaan; and they came unto Haran, and dwelt there. Now the Lord had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will show thee. I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great, and thou shalt be a blessing; and I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee; and in thee shall all the families of the earth be blessed. And Abram was seventy and five years old when he departed out of Haran. And Abram was an hundred years old when his son Isaac was born unto him. And it came to pass, that God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold here I am: and he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of

Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I shall tell thee of. And Abraham rose up early in the morning and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son; and clave the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up and went unto the place of which God had told him. And Abraham said unto his young men, Abide ye here with the ass, and I and the lad will go yonder and worship, and come again to you.

LESSON 27.

Abraham and Isaac.

SECOND PART.

3

And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it upon Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife. And Isaac spake unto Abraham his father, and said, My father, behold the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering. And they came to the place which God had told him of, and Abraham built an altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar upon the wood. And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son. And the angel of the Lord called unto him out of heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham; and he said, Here am I. And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou

any thing unto him; for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from me. And Abraham

lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold, behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns. And Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering, in the stead of his son. And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovah-jireh: as it is said to this day, in the mount of the Lord it shall be seen. And the angel of the Lord called unto Abraham, and said, By myself have I sworn, saith the Lord, for because thou hast done this thing, and hast not withheld thy son, thine only son, that in blessing I will bless thee: and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice.

LESSON 28.

History of Jacob and Joseph.

FIRST PART.

And Isaac called Jacob and blessed him, and charged him, and said unto him, Thou shalt not take a wife of the daughters of Canaan. Arise, go to Padan-aram, to the house of Bethuel, thy mother's father; and take thee a wife from thence of the daughters of Laban, thy mother's brother. And God Almighty bless thee, and make thee fruitful, and multiply thee, that thou mayest be a multitude of people; and give thee the blessing
