3 The dazzling sun at noonday hour-
Forth from his flaming vase

Flinging o'er earth the golden shower
Till vale and mountain blaze

[ocr errors]

But shows, O Lord, one beam of thine :
What, then, the day where thou dost shine!
4 O, how shall these dim eyes endure
That noon of living rays!

Or how our spirits, so impure,
Upon thy glory gaze!

Anoint, O Lord, anoint our sight,
And fit us for that world of light.

[blocks in formation]

Power and Majesty of God.

1 WITH reverence let the saints appear,
And bow before the Lord;

WATTS.

His high commands with reverence hear,
And tremble at his word.

2 How terrible thy glories be!

How bright thine armies shine!
Where is the power that vies with thee?
Or truth compared with thine?

3 The northern pole, and southern, rest
On thy supporting hand;

Darkness and day from east to west
Move round at thy command.

4 Thy words the raging winds control,
And rule the boisterous deep;
Thou mak'st the sleeping billows roll,
The rolling billows sleep.

5 Justice and judgment are thy throne,
Yet wondrous is thy grace;

While truth and mercy, joined in one,
Invite us near thy face.

[blocks in formation]

Exhortation to Praise.

1 YE tribes of Adam, join

WATTS.

With heaven, and earth, and seas,
And offer notes divine

To your Creator's praise;

Ye holy throng
Of angels bright,

In worlds of light
Begin the song.

2 The shining worlds above
In glorious order stand,
Or in swift courses move,
By his supreme command:

He spake the word,

And all their frame

From nothing came
To praise the Lord.

3 Let all the nations fear

The God that rules above;

He brings his people near,

And makes them taste his love;

[blocks in formation]

His saints shall raise

His honors high.

Praise from all Creatures.

WATTS.

1 NATURE, with all her powers, shall sing
Her great Creator and her King ;

Nor air, nor earth, nor skies, nor seas,
Deny the tribute of their praise.

2 Ye seraphs, who sit near his throne,
Begin to make his glories known;
Tune high your harps, and spread the sound
Throughout creation's utmost bound.

3 0, may our ardent zeal employ

Our loftiest thoughts and loudest songs;
Let there be sung, with warmest joy,
Hosanna from ten thousand tongues.

4 Yet, mighty God, our feeble frame
Attempts in vain to reach thy name;
The highest notes that angels raise
Fall far below thy glorious praise.

God the Life and Light of the World.
1 THOU art, O God, the life and light
Of all this wondrous world we see ;
Its glow by day, its smile by night,

Are but reflections caught from thee.
Where'er we turn, thy glories shine,
And all things fair and bright are thine.
2 When day, with farewell beam, delays
Among the opening clouds of even,
And we can almost think we gaze

Through golden vistas into heaven,
Those hues that make the sun's decline
So soft, so radiant, Lord, are thine.
3 When night, with wings of starry gloom,
O'ershadows all the earth and skies,
Like some dark, beauteous bird, whose plume
Is sparkling with unnumbered eyes,
That sacred gloom, those fires divine,
So grand, so countless, Lord, are thine.
4 When youthful spring around us breathes,
Thy spirit warms her fragrant sigh;
And every flower the summer wreaths
Is born beneath thy kindling eye:
Where'er we turn, thy glories shine,
And all things fair and bright are thine.

The Lord's Prayer.

FRISBIE.

1 O THOU, enthroned in worlds above,
Our Father and our Friend,

Lo! at the footstool of thy love
Thy children humbly bend.

2 All reverence to thy name be given,
Thy kingdom wide displayed:
And, as thy will is done in heaven,
Be it on earth obeyed.

3 Our table may thy bounty spread,
From thine exhaustless store,
From day to day with daily bread,
Nor would we ask for more.
4 That pardon we to others give,
Do thou to us extend;
From all temptation, O, relieve,
From every ill defend.

5 And now to thee belong, Most High,
The kingdom, glory, power,

Through the broad earth and spacious sky,
Till time shall be no more.

[blocks in formation]

1 THERE is a God, all nature speaks,

STEELE.

Through earth, and air, and seas, and skies;
See, from the clouds his glory breaks,
When the first beams of morning rise!

2 The rising sun, serenely bright,

O'er the wide world's extended frame
Inscribes, in characters of light,

His mighty Maker's glorious name.
3 Diffusing life, his influence spreads,
And health and plenty smile around;
And fruitful fields and verdant meads
Are with a thousand blessings crowned.
4 Ye curious minds, who roam abroad,
And trace creation's wonders o'er !

142.

Confess the footsteps of the God,
And bow before him and adore.

C. M.

Praise to God.

1 LET them neglect thy glory, Lord,
Who never knew thy grace;
But our loud songs shall still record
The wonders of thy praise.

WATTS.

2 We raise our shouts, O God, to thee,
And send them to thy throne;
All glory to the Father be,

The undivided One.

3 Hosanna! let the earth and skies
Repeat the joyful sound;

143.

Rocks, hills, and vales reflect the voice
In one eternal round.

C. M.

Praise at all Times.

HEGINBOTHAM.

1 MY soul shall praise thee, O my God,

Through all my mortal days,
And in eternity prolong

Thy vast, thy boundless praise.

2 In every smiling, happy hour,
Be this my sweet employ

Thy praise refines my earthly bliss,
And heightens all my joy.

3 When anxious grief and gloomy care
Afflict my throbbing breast,

My tongue shall learn to speak thy praise,
And lull each pain to rest.

4 Nor shall my tongue alone proclaim
The honors of my God;

My life, with all its active powers,
Shall spread thy praise abroad.
