A facsimile reprint of the Codex Alexandrinus, one of the most beautiful specimens of ancient Greek caligraphy in existence. The original Manuscript was sent as a present to King Charles I., by Cyril Lucaris, patriarch of Constantinople, in the year 1628. Cyril brought it from Alexandria, where it is supposed to have been written. In an accompanying schedule he relates that according to tradition, it was written by Thecia, a noble Egyptian lady, in about the seventh century. It is printed in uncial characters, as in the original, letter for letter, word for word, line for line, and column for column, without divisions of words or chapters, or change of the peculiar orthography, or correction even of the errors occasionally occurring. Mr. Baber, not being content with the limited fount of types exclusively cast for Dr. Woide's facsimile of the Testament, and being anxious to give a closer resemblance than Dr. Woide had done, considerably enlarged the variety of the metal types, and had several hundred peculiar marks, words, and even whole sentences, and all the ornamental parts, engraved on blocks of wood, and incorporated with the types in their appropriate places; he also printed the rubrics as they occurred in their proper coloured ink. The original MS. was presented to the University of Cambridge by Theodore Beza, who says in the letter that accompanied it, that it had been found in the Monastery of St. Iræneus at Lyons, and that it had been in his own possession nineteen years. Professor Porson collated the printed copy of Dr. Kipling, and the only fault he could detect was in a single letter of the margin. It was undertaken for the use of the Roman Catholics, and was first published at Cracow in 1561. Some few leaves at the beginning of this very scarce book are mended, and a small portion of the printing wanting. I do not call the present a fine copy, the Polish bookseller, Lissner in Posen, described this copy Superbe exempl. d'une conservation parfaite, orné d'un frontispice, qui manque à la plupart des exemplaires. Fort rare.
