2500 FORBES' (Jas.) ORIENTAL MEMOIRS; a Narrative of Seventeen Years' Residence in India, including Observations on parts of Africa and South America, and Journals of Four Indian Voyages, 4 vols. 4to. with all the plates, a very beautiful copy in grained calf, gilt edges, £7. 10s 1813 Priced, 1831, H. Bohn, calf, £10. 108; 1834, Arch, £12. 12s; 1837, Arch, £10. 108; 1843, J. Bohn, russia, £12. 128; Rodwell, morocco, £12. 128

"This is the original and only complete edition. It was printed at the expense of the author; the composition was the labour and amusement of many years. It abounds with striking pictures

of the manners, customs, and the habits of the people of India. In the Quarterly Review, Vol. XII. is an elaborate account of the work, which occupies forty-seven pages. The Reviewer observes, ‘A WORK MORE SPLENDID OR MORE COMPLETE IN ITS DECORATIONS WE HAVE SELDOM SEEN.' At the death of Mr. Forbes some reserved copies were deposited in a warehouse aud forgotten, or not a single copy would have remained unsold. It had long been considered scarce, and in consequence his daughter, the late Countess de Montalembert, was induced to republish the work in an abridged form, with a portion of the plates, which edition, from the impossibility of securing the present, obtained a rapid sale, and is now out of print."

"The drawings and collections of Mr. Forbes seem almost to exceed the powers of human industry and perseverance, and this literary monument to his name may fairly be considered the essence of his EXTRAORDINARY RESEARCHES. The whole work is very entertaining as well as instructive."-Literary Gazette.

"Of all the books which have been published on India, this perhaps is the most sterlingly valuable."-Atlas.

"It is to be regretted that this very splendid and expensive work was not published in a cheaper form, as it abounds in most striking pictures of the manners, customs, &c. of India."-Stevenson. 2501 HABESCI (Elias) Objects interesting to the English Nation, 2 vols. small 8vo. half bound, 68 Calcutta, 1793

This work treats upon the political and natural condition of the Chinese Empire, the adjacent islands, Cochin China, Pegu, and the East in general, and it submits to the Colonial Government reflections and propositions for the alteration of British policy with regard to those states. 2502 HAMAKER, Catalogus Codicum MSS. "There are few authors to whom Oriental literature is under more deep obligations than to Sir Will. Jones; few who, like him, have not merely pointed out original and important sources of knowledge, but contributed in no inconsiderable degree to render them accessible. He was equally remarkable for his ardour and industry in philological pursuits from a very early period of his life, until its premature and lamented close."-Welsford, Origin of the English Language.

"His writings everywhere breathe pure taste in morals as well as in literature; and it may be said with truth, that not a single sentiment has escaped him which does not indicate the real elegance and dignity which pervaded the most secret recesses of his mind. No author is better calculated to inspire those generous sentiments of liberty, without which the most just principles are useless and lifeless."-Sir James Mackintosh.
