Hamburg, 1845-57 This extensive work is now completed, it comprises a full statement of our present knowledge of Egyptian history. 2657 BURTON'S Excerpta Hieroglyphica, or Exact Copies of various Hieroglyphical Inscriptions and Sculptured Monuments still existing in Egypt, and Nubia, and at Mount Sinai, &c. &c. 4 parts, complete in 1 vol. oblong folio, containing 62 most curious plates, PRIVATELY PRINTED, hf. bd. very rare, £2. 10s Cairo, 1825-37 "Burton's Excerpta Hieroglyphica is a very useful collection, containing as it does, copies of the monuments relating to the succession of the Kings of the most interesting period of Egyptian History; and many other important subjects.”—Sir Gardiner Wilkinson.

The subjects are drawn from the ancient Monuments of Alexandria, Memphis, the Pyramids, Thebes, &c. and were selected from some of those considered the most illustrative of the Chronological history and mythology of Egypt. It is a singularly curious and interesting work, and the impression very limited.

Usually sold unbound at £40. cost of binding £10. 1847

A valuable work, illustrating the Manners and Customs, the Private Life, Government, Laws, Art, Manufactures, Religion, Agriculture, and Early History of the Ancient Egyptians, derived from a comparison of the Paintings, Sculptures, and Monuments still existing, with the accounts of ancient authors.

"Indefatigable in research, full of learning, accurate in facts, and logical in the application of his facts and his learning, Sir Gardner Wilkinson has at the same time treated his subject with the enthusiasm of Genius and the liveliness of Poetry. He opens to you the Temple of their Deities, the Palace of their Sovereigns, the Fields of Battle, and the Repositories of their Dead. He traces for you their early history; he exhibits to you their knowledge of the Arts and Sciences, the course of their Husbandry, and the process of their Manufactures; and he introduces you to their private life, with a graphic vivacity which makes you at once a judge of the virtues and vices of the Egyptian character, and a partaker, as it were, of the intimacies of their domestic society."-Lord Ripon's Address to the Royal Society of Literature, 1841.

Topographical Survey of Thebes, Tapé, Thaba, or Diospolis Magna, and the Pyramids of Geezeh, by Sir Gardner Wilkinson, in 7 large maps, each 341⁄2 in. by 221, 21s

1830

These maps contain the only true and authentic information respecting the topography of the famous Thebes. The surveys were made from the actual observations of Sir Gardner Wilkinson, and were executed by him with the greatest care and accuracy. They are accompanied by explanatory and descriptive references in the margins. This survey fills up a blank, which was not supplied even by the great French work on Egypt, in which the map of Thebes is most imperfect, while this one gives the exact position of every ruin at Thebes, together with the hills and vallies about it, the whole laid down by accurate triangulation, which is extended even to the tombs of individuals and the most minute objects, and all finished upon the ground. The hill of Abd el Goorna, behind the Memnonium, alone occupied Sir Gardner Wilkinson thirty days from morning till night, and every tomb is laid down by bearings. The survey was the work of many months, and the copies of the map now offered to the public contain the latest discoveries added by Sir Gardner Wilkinson's last visit to Egypt in 1856.
