3972 KINGSBOROUGH'S (Lord) ANTIQUITIES OF MEXICO: comprising facsimiles of Ancient Mexican Paintings and Hieroglyphics, preserved in the Royal Libraries of Paris, Berlin, and Dresden; in the Imperial Library of Vienna; in the Vatican Library; in the Borgian Museum at Rome; in the Library of the Institute of Bologna; and in the Bodleian Library at Oxford; together with the Monuments of New Spain, by M. Dupaix; with their respective scales of measurement, and accompanying descriptions; the whole illustrated by many valuable inedited MSS. 9 vols, impl. folio, containing upwards of 1000 large coLOURED plates, embracing all the Remains of Mexican Architecture, Art, Religion, etc.

After an interval of seventeen years two more volumes of this extraordinary work have been published, in every respect uniform with the preceding, consisting, 1. of Supplementary Notes in English and Spanish; 2. of Extracts from the works of Torquemada, Acosta and Garcia, illustrating the last portion of the Mexican paintings, contained in the collection of Mendoza, and shewing the correspondence which exists between many of the Mexican and Hebrew laws; 3. Adair's History of the North American Indians, their customs and descent from the Jews; 4. Cartas ineditas de Hernando Cortez; 5. Cronica Mexicana de Tezozomoe; 6. Historia Chichimeca y Relaciones por Fernando de Alva Ixtlilxochitl.

"When, some four centuries ago, the enterprise of Spanish navigators opened the vast continent of America to the admiration of Europe, the civilization of the New World was found to be concentrated in two spots, and two only, of that enormous territory. One of these favoured regions was Peru; the other was Mexico. IT WAS IN MEXICO ESPECIALLY THAT ART, POLITICS, AND SCIENCE HAD RECEIVED THEIR GREATEST DEVELOPMENT. All the rest of North America, from the shores of Hudson's Bay to the mouths of the Mississippi, was desolate and barbarous, diversified only by swamp, forest, or prairie, and populated by savages without knowledge or laws. Mexico alone redeemed the character of the new continent, and presented to the eyes of the invaders a spectacle so marvellous as to satisfy even the expectations which the great discovery had raised. There the Spaniards found an organized State, an ancient polity, and opulent capital, an exalted dynasty, a formidable priesthood, and a people well skilled in mechanical and decorative arts. So great, in fact, was the proficiency of the Mexican workmen, so elaborate the system of government, and so impressive the whole evidence of wealth and grandeur, that for some time the civilization of Mexico was regarded as superior to that of Europe. Although, indeed, the researches of modern inquirers have enabled us to apply some corrective to these ideas, it is really probable that in certain respects the Spaniards found Mexico more advanced than Spain, and we have been recently assured on the authority of a comprehensive history that this civilization was the necessary incident of geographical and natural advantages. Such was the situation and configuration of Mexico that it could hardly fail to make progress, and all that was discovered there in the shape of national wealth or political order represented the extraordinary opportunities which nature had provided."-Times, Dec. 8, 1858.

3973 KUNSTMANN (Fr.) THE DISCOVERY OF AMERICA: die Entdeckung Amerikas, nach den ältesten Quellen geschichtlich dargestellt; mit einem ATLAS alter bisher ungedruckter Karten, 4to. Text and very large folio ATLAS of 13 Maps, being facsimiles of Early PORTULANI, represented with scrupulous accuracy by J. Schleicher and S. Minsinger, £4. 14s München, 1859

The most valuable modern contribution to our knowledge of geographical discovery, the work forms part of the "Monumenta Sæcularia" of the Royal Bavarian Academy of Science.

The Royal Academy of Sciences at Munich has recently done an important service in the cause of Geographical Science, by the publication of a work entitled 'Die Entdeckung Amerikas. Nach dem ältesten Quellen geschichtlich dargestellt von Friedrich Kunstmann. Mit einem Atlas alter bisher Ungedruckter Karten' (München). This work forms a part of the series called 'Monumenta Sæcularia,' issued by the Academy, and contains a most able account of the several discoveries made in America from the time of the Northmen downwards. Its principal attraction, however, lies in the atlas of the thirteen maps by which it is illustrated. These are in folio, while the letter-press is in quarto, and contain accurate representations of some of the earliest maps of America existing in the Court and State Library at Munich, the Library of the University and the "Haupt-Conservatorium" of the Bavarian Army. They comprise the maps of Pedro Reinel,

of the Viscount De Majolo, of Vaz Dourado and others, besides an English map drawn by one Thomas Hood, in 1592, and showing the whole east coast of North America down to the Isthmus of Panama. All these are lithographed in the first style of the art, and handsomely coloured to resemble the originals.

3975 LAET (Jean de) Histoire du Nouveau Monde ou Description des Indes Occidentales, folio, many maps of American Coast Territory, also some woodcuts of American Natural History, old half calf gilt, 368 Leyde, B. et A. The value of official manuscripts of this period relating to the History of America cannot be overrated, especially when like the above they comprehend such a number of interesting particulars, such as the statements of the population and number of troops, surveys of forts and military defences; tables of the number and value of exports and imports; commerce with Great Britain and the neighbouring French Colonies; account of the Mines of Gold, Silver, Iron, Copper, Lead and Coal; of the fishing, and satus of the fur and timber trades, &c., &c. in each province. Thus are all the important features of the country at this period and for a little time before clearly brought out, shewing it ripening, as it were, for the seven years' war, and making a link in the chain of American History which ought not to be overlooked. To give a further idea of the work, the following is quoted from the dedication:-" In obedience to your Majesty's commands, we have prepared the

following state of your Majesty's plantations on the Continent of America. Wherein we have distinguished respective situations, government, strength, and trade, and have observed of what importance their commerce is to Great Britain. Whereunto having added an account of the French Settlements and of the encroachments they have made on your Majesty's Colonies in those parts, we have humbly proposed such methods as may best prevent the encrease of an evil, which, if not timely prevented, may prove destructive to your Majesty's interest; and have likewise offered such considerations, as in our opinion may contribute to the improving and enlarging your Majesty's dominions in America." Concerning the Map may be added, that all manuscript maps of the above period are of the greatest rarity, and that the one in the above volume is on Mercator's projection, and so beautifully executed as to resemble an impression from a copper-plate.

Altogether, considering the increasing difficulties of obtaining manuscripts and books which relate to the country before the establishment of Independence, the Collector of American literary rarities ought not to let the above unpublished treasure escape him.
