"A work of very great research, admirable in its arrangement, of great perspicuity, and a production of a very high character. The Dictionary of Dr. Spiers was by far the best (French and English) Dictionary he had even seen."-Vice-Chancellor Sir W. P. Wood, Times, Feb. 26, 1858.

Spiers' French Dictionary may emphatically be called "THE MOST PRACTICAL of all published." Talented linguists of France and England have combined in the task of producing, in a compact form, a Dictionary comprising all modern Terms, Scientific words, Idioms, Phrases, and Difficulties, thus making it an eminently useful Book of Reference to English and French Students. 234 ABRÉGÉ Chronologique de l'Histoire générale d'ITALIE, depuis la chute de

A noble work-a masterpiece of historical narration. The author relies entirely upon contemporary information, and introduces, as far as possible, the same language; he gives in the style of Froissart a most faithful picture of that eventful period of English and French History, the possession of France by the English. The peculiar position of the Dukes of Burgundy, first as masters of France, and afterwards as almost independent Sovereigns of Burgundy, Picardy, Flanders, Holland, and Luxembourg, their struggles for power in France, their combats with the proud cities of Flanders, their magnificence in public entries and tournaments, their great influence in the affairs of Europe, and their extinction in the Battle of Nancy, by the victorious Swiss, are all of the most stirring interest, and serve indeed as the best guide for the understanding of Medieval History, its glory and its misery.

This edition is the most correct and the most complete that has hitherto appeared, with regard to the text and the notes of Boileau himself, and the variantes of former editions.

"If I am not deceived there is something in all the compositions of Boileau, so finished, so removed from conceit, and from forced thought; there is such an ardent zeal for propriety in sentiment and in expression, such a sense of the dignity of the human character, when undebased; such a hatred of hypocrisy; such a love of purity; such an abhorrence of all profaneness, and of indecency, and even of indelicacy; that I am not able to name a man whose works, as a poet and a critic, may be read and studied with equal advantage.”—Pursuits of Literature, &c. p. 49.

"Boileau may be compared to the dog, whose sagacity is remarkable, as well as its fawning on its master, and its snarling on those he dislikes. If Boileau was too stern to admit the pliancy of grace, he compensates by good sense and propriety. He is like (for I will drop animals) an upright magistrate, whom you may respect, but whose public justice and severity leave an awe that discourages familiarity."-Works of Hor. Walpole, vol. v. p. 600.

Londres (Maestricht), 1779 "Brantôme is frequently an amusing and instructive writer, but his naïveté often borders upon what must be considered not a little licentious. He has preserved many important facts, as well as entertaining anecdotes, which must have otherwise perished. It is pleasant to find the unaccountable omission of his name by La Harpe, supplied by a short, but smart notice of him, by Barbier." Dibdin's Library Companion, p. 538.

The reader will find the notice mentioned by Mr. Dibdin, in Barbier's Bibliothèque d'un Homme de Goût, vol. 4, p. 17.

Mr. Dibdin adds in a note, "We owe to Brantôme, I believe, the preservation of the affecting song which Mary sung in the vessel, while quitting the shores of France, to return to her kingdom. Yet there may be reasonable doubts of its authenticity. Was the sensitive mind of a woman in her situation, in a state to warble ditties ?"

“Here M. Villemain (in one of his Lectures) compared the cold narrative given by Robertson, of the last moments of the interesting Mary Stuart, with the unpretending page left by Brantôme, who was merely a man of the world. Brantôme's page is picturesque and true, and almost sublime because it is true; while the laboriously polished narrative of Robertson is, at bottom, a mere fiction. And why is this? Because Brantôme wrote with the feelings and simplicity of his age; while Robertson was merely a citizen of Edinburgh, who had become learned by poring over the works of old authors, but he wanted that turn of mind which was necessary to enable him to see events as they really happened."-New Monthly Magazine, vol. 23, p. 95.

This edition, says Brunet, is the finest and most correct we have hitherto had of this poet. It contains also the translation of The Imitation of Christ, the Poésies diverses of P. Corneille, and the three best pieces of his brother, and some of the notes of Palissot.

"The greatest of the French dramatic poets. He was born at Rouen, in 1606, and for some time practised in that city as an advocate. His first dramatic performance was Mélite,' a comedy, which met with such distinguished success, that he was encouraged to devote his rare powers to the drama. The tragedies of Medea,' 'The Cid,' 'The Horatii,' and Cinna,' followed, and established for their author a pre-eminent station among French dramatists. Besides the foregoing, he wrote many other tragedies; and translated Thomas à Kempis, On the Imitation of Jesus Christ.' It is melancholy to reflect that Corneille, who had achieved fame equally for himself and his country's literature, ended his days in poverty and distress. Died 1684."

Brux. 1840

This grand historical work ought to be studied by every British Statesman; the maxims and causes which rendered Venice great and powerful, and produced its ruin after 1400 years of splendour, apply in many respects to this country, and important lessons may be drawn from Daru's charming volumes.

"This work, (says Brunet) one of the most important that has appeared of late years, has already taken its place among our best historical works."

"The author, Count Daru, has enjoyed opportunities for consulting a far greater number of authentic documents than any preceding writer on Venetian History. He had not only free access to the secret archives after their removal to Paris, but his efforts seem to have been indefatigable in collecting such further materials, as the great libraries of the continent could afford. He has thus accumulated notices in his appendix, on nearly four thousand manuscripts, above half of which he declares that he has personally inspected. He has rendered his two last volumes an admirable catalogue raisonné of the authorities on which his labours have been founded; he has facilitated enquiry into his own accuracy, and the historical student is guided to various original sources of investigation. But the best claims to praise must rest, of course, on the judgment and ability which he has displayed in the use of his materials. We have had occasion to subject his volumes to a rigid scrutiny, and we have risen from the comparison of his labours with those of earlier writers, under a strong conviction of his industry, accuracy and good sense."-Quarterly Review. 282 DELEWARDE, Histoire generale du HAINAU, jusqu'en 1555, 5 vols. 16mo. old calf Mons, 1718-22
