The above set of SPANISH HISTORIADORES of ARAGON, 17 vols. folio, good sound copy in Spanish vellum, £10. 10s

1622-84 A similar collection, in 17 vols. without the Blasco de Lanuza, 2 vols.' and the continuation of Argensola by Uztarroz, but having instead ' La Ripa, Corona real del Pirineo, and Defensa del reyno de Sobrarbe, 3 vols. Zaragoza, 1675-88,' was priced, in 1843, by Salva, 375 francs.

"The author who has related the principal events in our early history with most learning and fidelity, and to the best advantage, and who deserves to be read more than once with the utmost at

tention, is Geronimo de Zurita, and I do not think anything more is necessary in order to acquire a sufficient knowledge of our history."-The Marquis of Mondexar, in his Noticia y juicio de los mas principales historiadores de Espana.

Zurita examined and used all the Documents and State Papers scattered throughout the Spanish Dominions for his valuable history: the "Annals of Aragon" contain the History of Spain from the invasion of the country by the Arabs to 1516.

"The whole work is more important to Spanish history than any that had preceded it. It has hardly anything of the monkish credulity of the old chronicles, for Zurita was a man of the world. It shows not unfrequently a generosity of opinion on political subjects remarkable in a secretary of Philip II. and Inquisitor."-Ticknor, III. 129.

"Excellent historian, extremely accurate in tracing the progress of the laws and constitutions of his country."-Robertson's Charles V. 824 DE CASTRO (Joseph Rodriguez) Biblioteca Española que contiene la noticia de los Escritores Rabinos Españoles, la de los Escritores Gentiles Españoles, y la de los Christianos, hasta fines del siglo XIII de la Iglesia, 2 vols. folio, calf, 278

"This work is not mentioned by Ticknor. It contains a thousand pieces selected from upwards of a hundred and sixty authors, many of them anonymous, and some in MSS., never before otherwise published. It is divided into three parts or volumes; each part is again subdivided into Religious, Doctrinal, Amatory, Humourous; but it contains neither the Historic and Chivalric, nor the Moorish ballads."

Faber, a German, (consul to the Hanse Towns) collected the finest Spanish Library ever brought together by an individual. After his death, the Spanish Government would not allow the books to be exported, although unable to pay for them at the time. They were incorporated with the Royal Library, at Madrid; and the last instalment of the purchase money reached the executors at Hamburgh, in 1842, after a lapse of ten years.

"The Collection is very rich and various; and Faber has displayed much taste in making it : on the whole, no other approaches it. It is an invaluable book. Let him who possesses it procure Depping's Romancero,' and he will have, on the subject, everthing that can be desired."

"His discourses are written in a bold and affluent style, somewhat mystical, as were his own religious tendencies; but they are written with remarkable purity of idiom, and breathe everywhere the spirit of the religion that was so deeply impressed on his age and country. Perhaps a more characteristic specimen of Spanish eloquence can hardly be found than that in which Luis de Granada describes the resurrection of the Saviour; adding to it his descent into hell to rescue the souls of the righteous who were pining there, because they had died before his great sacrifice was completed."-Ticknor, III. p. 115.
