"The commentary contains a mine of various and solid literature, and exhibits a great number of new and happy illustrations of hitherto unintelligible places."-Fuhrmann.

"But of all the philologists of ancient Greece, Athenæus is probably the most amusing and instructive; and there is hardly any work of which the incomplete state in which it is left is more to be regretted, than the Deipnosophiste (The Banquet of the Wise Men) of this curious philologist. It may be only essential to remark, that the first edition of Athenæus was put forth by Aldus in 1514, Gr. folio; and that the best editions are those by Casaubon and Schweighæuser."-Dibdin. 1583 ATHENAEUS. Athenæus is one of the Montaigne and Burton class of writers. In the original "Deipnosophists," a number of learned men of all professions, who converse upon various subjects, we have such infinite variety of facts and citations, that it is perhaps the most amusing book antiquity has handed down to us.
