Our wayward intellect, the more we learn
Of Nature, overlooks her Author more;
From instrumental causes proud to draw
Conclusion retrograde, and mad mistake:
But if His Word once teach us-shoot a ray
Through all the heart's dark chambers, and reveal
Truth undiscerned but by this holy light;

Then all is plain."

COWPER.

[Sophron is writing in his library-Neologus is announced. After friendly salutations they begin to converse.]

Sophron. Well, my good friend, I am glad to see you safe in Old England. When did you return from Germany?

Neologus. About three months ago, after an absence of nearly ten years.

1 Sophron means "sound in mind;" Neologus, "of new opinions."
