2 They wound His head, His hands, His feet,
Till streams of blood each other meet;
By lot His garments they divide,
And mock the pangs in which He died.

3 But God, His Father, heard His cry;
Raised from the dead, He reigns on high;
The nations learn His righteousness,
And humble sinners taste His grace.

Isaac Watts, 1719.

PSALM 22. PART III.

C. M.

ALL ye that fear Him, praise the Lord;

Α

His sacred name adore;

And His chosen Israel,
ye

Praise Him for evermore.

2 Let all the glad converted world
To Him their homage pay,
And scatter'd nations of the earth
One sov'reign Lord obey.

3 With humble worship to His throne
Let all for aid resort;

That power which first their being gave,
Alone can give support.

4 Let them, O Lord, Thy truth declare,
And show Thy righteousness;

That children, yet unborn, may learn
Thy glory to confess.

Cornpiled from Old and New Versions, 1562—1696.

PSALM 23.

VERSION 1. C. M.

Y Shepherd will supply my need,
Jehovah is His name;

In pastures fresh He makes me feed,
Beside the living stream.

2 He brings my wandering spirit back
When I forsake His ways:
And leads me, for His mercy's sake,
In paths of truth and grace.

3 When I walk through the shades of death,
Thy presence is my stay;

A word of Thy supporting breath
Drives all my fears away.

4 Thy hand, in spite of all my foes,
Ďoth still my table spread;
My cup with blessings overflows;
Thine oil anoints my head.

5 The sure provisions of my God
Attend me all my days;

Oh may Thy house be mine abode,
And all my work be praise!

6 There would I find a settled rest,
While others go and come;

No more a stranger, or a guest,
But like a child at home.

PSALM 23.

Isaac Watts, 1719.

VERSION II. C. M.

1 THe makes me down to lie

HE Lord's my Shepherd, I'll not want,

In pastures green: He leadeth me
The quiet waters by.

2 My soul He doth restore again,
And me to walk doth make
Within the paths of righteousness,
E'en for His own name's sake.

3 Yea, though I walk through death's dark vale, Yet will I fear no ill:

For Thou art with me, and Thy rod
And staff me comfort still.

4 My table Thou hast furnished
In presence of my foes;

My head Thou dost with oil anoint, my cup overflows.

And my cup

5 Goodness and mercy all my life
Shall surely follow me; .

And in God's house for evermore
My dwelling-place shall be.

Scotch Version, 1641.

PSALM 23. VERSION III. S. M. HE Lord my Shepherd is, TI shall be well supplied; Since He is mine, and I am His, What can I want beside?

2 He leads me to the place

Where heavenly pasture grows, Where living waters gently pass, And full salvation flows.

3 If e'er I go astray,

He doth my soul reclaim;

And guides me in His own right way,
For His most holy name.

4 While He affords His aid, I cannot yield to fear;

Though I should walk through death's dark My Shepherd's with me there.

5 In spite of all my foes,

Thou dost my table spread; My cup with blessings overflows, And joy exalts my head.

6 The bounties of Thy love

Shall crown my following days; Nor from Thy house will I remove, Nor cease to speak Thy praise.

23 PSALM 23. VER. IV. L. M., 8s., 6 lines.

1

HE Lord

THE

my pasture shall prepare,
And feed me with a Shepherd's care;
His presence shall my wants supply,
And guard me with a watchful eye;
My noonday walks He will attend,
And all my midnight hours defend.

2 Though in the paths of death I tread,
With gloomy horrors overspread,
My stedfast heart shall fear no ill,
For Thou, O Lord! art with me still:
Thy friendly crook shall give me aid,
And guide me through the dreadful shade.

Joseph Addison, 1712.

[blocks in formation]

UR Lord is risen from the dead;
OUR Lord is risen from the high
Our Jesus gone up on high;
The powers of hell are captive led-
Dragg'd to the portals of the sky.
2 There His triumphal chariot waits,
And angels chant the solemn lay;-
"Lift up your heads, ye heavenly gates!
Ye everlasting doors, give way!"

3 Loose all your bars of massy light,
And wide unfold the ethereal scene;
He claims those mansions as His right:-
Receive the King of Glory in.

4

66

Who is the King of Glory, who?"
The Lord, that all His foes o'ercame;
The world, sin, death, and hell o'erthrew,
And Jesus is the Conqueror's name.

5 Lo! His triumphal chariot waits,
And angels chant the solemn lay;-
"Lift up your heads, ye heavenly gates!
Ye everlasting doors, give way!'

6 "Who is the King of Glory, who?"
The Lord of glorious power possess'd,
The King of saints and angels too:
God over all, for ever bless'd!

MINE my desire

Are ever to the Lord;

And rest upon His word.
