has marked out for us.

the things of this life, and wean us from all vain confidence. Oh help us to tread in the path which Christ May we be useful, finding our meat and drink, as he did, in doing thy will. Every talent intrusted to us may we improve; every opportunity of doing good may we thankfully accept; and oh grant to us thine Holy Spirit to dwell in our hearts, and to sanctify us, body, soul, and spirit, to the Lord.

Let every part of our family receive from thee spiritual and everlasting blessings. We thank thee, O Lord, for temporal favour. Life, and health, and comfort are thy gifts; and granted to us, they come to the unworthy. Our food from day to day, the place of our abode, and the pleasures of domestic and social intercourse, we trace thy goodness in them all,

May we know how to improve every mercy to thy glory, and grant to us, through thine abundant love in Jesus Christ, that these mercies may be but the introduction to the pleasures which are at thy right hand for evermore. We pray for our land. Be thou a wall of fire round about us, and the glory in the midst of us. May the righteous flourish in the land, and let there be abundance of peace, that the children which shall be created may praise the Lord. O Father, hear us in the name of him who teaches us to pray to thee as our Father, &c. &c.

Look upon us, O Lord our God, prostrate before thy throne to seek an evening blessing. Thou hast been with us to-day, and hast kept our feet from falling, our eyes from tears, and our life from destruction. We thank thee for thy care. Thou art our shield, our guide, and our defence; and in addition to temporal favours thou hast continued to us spiritual blessings, permitting us to read and think upon thy word, to call upon thee, and in the business of life to realize thy presence. What shall we render to the Lord for all his benefits done unto us? We will take the cup of salvation and call upon the name of the Lord. Unite our hearts in this service; and may our petitions come before thee with acceptance, through the intercession of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. With him thou art ever well pleased. O Lord, look upon us in him, and let thy merciful favour be upon us for his sake.

This day has furnished renewed occasion for penitence, humility, and prayer. In many things we all offend. We have wandered from thee in thought. Our words have been tainted with evil; and though we may have been kept from open and flagrant sin, our affections have been grovelling and polluted. O Lord, pardon us, we beseech thee, for the Redeemer's sake. Cleanse us in the fountain of his blood; and may we now commit ourselves to repose in the enjoyment of peace with thee. Every thought and plan

of ours to-day that may have been inconsistent with thy will, do thou, in mercy, frustrate. Every thing that we have devised and done in accordance with thy will, conduct, we beseech thee, to a prosperous issue. In all our ways we would acknowledge thee. Oh, give us right views of our worldly engagements, and may we behold them in their true character as surrounded with the light of heaven. Let them never turn away our hearts from thee; and never suffer us, O our God, to become covetous, or proud, or hardened against thee.

We rejoice that all things are under thy control, and that in every place, and with every object, thou art present. To us things are great or small according to their present results. great and nothing small. adornest a flower with equal care. Thy power and wisdom are lavished upon every part of the creation. Thou art our Father. We hear thee saying to usBe careful for nothing, but in every thing by prayer and supplication make your requests known unto God. Thou hast heard our prayers heretofore. Grant, then, O Lord, that we may never fail to roll our burthens, cares, wishes, and wants before thy throne; and may we ever love to seek thine help. Be thou at our right hand for our protection and guidance, and may we confide in thee without hesitation, and commit ourselves and all our concerns to thee with filial love. Thus, while we live, may we live unto the Lord; and when we die, may we die unto the Lord. Have us now for the night under thy holy keeping, and do for us, and in us, all that we need; through Jesus Christ, our only Lord and Saviour. Amen.

JOHN II. 13-25; III. 1–21.

MORNING HYMN.

"Unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of Righteousness arise with healing in his wings."

SOMETIMES a light surprises

The Christian while he sings;

It is the Lord, who rises

With healing on his wings.
When comforts are declining,
He grants the soul again
A season of clear shining,
To cheer it after rain.

Set free from present sorrow,
We cheerfully can say,
E'en let the unknown morrow
Bring with it what it may.
It can bring with it nothing

But he will bear us through;
Who gives the lilies clothing,
Will clothe his people too.

Though vine nor fig-tree either

Their wonted fruit should bear;

Though all the field should wither,
Nor flock nor herd be there;

Yet God the same abiding,

His praise shall tune my voice;

For, while in him confiding,
I cannot but rejoice.

JOHN IV. 1-30.

EVENING HYMN.

"So he giveth his beloved sleep."

WHAT though my frail eyelids refuse
Continual watchings to keep,
And, punctual as midnight renews,
Demand the refreshment of sleep;

A sov❜reign Protector I have,
Unseen, yet for ever at hand,
Unchangeably faithful to save,
Almighty to rule and command.

From evil secure, and its dread,
I rest, if my Saviour is nigh,
And songs his kind presence indeed
Shall in the night season supply.
He smiles and my comforts abound,
His grace as the dew shall descend,
And walls of salvation surround

The soul he delights to defend.

Kind author and ground of my hope,
Thee, thee for my God I avow,
My glad Ebenezer set up,

And own thou hast help'd me till now. I muse on the years that are past,

Wherein my defence thou hast proved;

Nor wilt thou relinquish at last

A sinner so signally loved.
