Was I, as Abra'm, ftrong in faith,
And boldly faithful unto death,
I'd bid my faithfulness adieu,
And Jefus only faithful view.

3 If I more meek than Mofes were,
Quite free from anger, ftrife, or fear,
Yet this I gladly would defpife,
And Jefu's meekness only prize.

Was I, as Job, fubmiffive, still,
Patient, refign'd to ev'ry ill,
Yet, when I look at Jefu's cross,
I count all this no more than drofs.

5 If I was wife as Solomon,

Like him with zeal and ardour fhone,
Like him I'd vain and foolish fee
My wisdom, zeal-yea all but Thee!

6 Had I an angel's purity,

Yet even this I would deny;

Nor good confefs, in name or thing,
Except in Chrift, my Lord and King!

Publican and Pharifee.

God refifteth the proud, but giveth grace to the bumble. James iv. 6.

If we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged of the Lord. 1 Cor. xi. 31.

BE

EHOLD how finners difagree-
The publican and pharifee—

One doth his righteousness proclaim,
The other owns his guilt and fhame:

2 The one at humble diftance ftands,
And owns the breach of God's commands;
The other rifes near the throne,

And talks of duties he has done.

3 The Lord their diff'rent language knows,
And diff'rent answers he bestows:

The humble foul with grace he crowns,
Whilft on the proud his anger frowns.

Peter's Fall.

Though I should die with thee, yet will I not deny thee. Matt. xxvi. 35.

He denied with an oath-I do not know the man. Matt. xxvi. 72.

Let him that thinketh he ftandeth take heed left he fall. 1 Cor. x. 12.

HOW eafily man

Miftakes his own heart,

And fancies he can

A&t up to his part;
Has no apprehenfion
Of weakness within,
But thinks good intention
Will guard him from fin.

2 So Peter once thought,
And honestly spake;
But quickly was brought
To fee his mistake:
His valour was tried,
And cowardice prov'd;

He ftoutly denied

The Mafter he lov'd.

3 In Peter I fee

My nature difplay'd,
High-minded to be,
Yet quickly difmay'd:

Prefuming on valour,
And wildom, and strength,
We tumble the fouler
And faster at length.

4 Enfeebled we are,

5

Yet ftout in felf-will;
No ftrength for the war,
Yet confident ftill:
Afhamed to tarry
When called to fight;
Yet fure to miscarry
When left to our might.

If Peter could fall,

And fall fuch a length,
Then wo be to all

Who trust their own ftrength;
The ftrength of their nature,
Or ftrength of their grace:
They fooner or later

Will fuffer difgrace.

6 No more I would walk

In fuch empty fhew;

No more I would talk
Of feats I can do ;
But build a fafe neft in

The Saviour's own tow'r,

And put my whole truft in
mercy and pow'r.

As good Stewards of the manifold grace of God

1 Pet. iv. 10.

I ONCE David fent to hear
How many men of might

In Ifrael's tribes appear,

Full grown, and fit for fight:
The tale is brought-but oh the pain !→
It cost him seventy thousand men!

2 Raw pilgrims oft relate,

Their gifts and gracious walk;

Nor fee how Satan's bait

Is laid in fuch fine talk:

On Jefu's fulness let me feaft;
On Jefus live; in Jefus reft!

3

Whatever God may give,
In providence or grace,
The gift with thanks receive,

And use it in its place;

But truft not in the given store,

Nor count thy treasures o'er and o'er.
