3 It treads on the world, and on hell;
It vanquishes death and despair;
And (what is ftill ftranger to tell)
It overcomes heaven by pray'r!

4 By this a vile worm of the dust

Can commune with God as a friend,
Can hope his forgiveness is juft,

And truft in God's love to the end.

231.

The only Refuge.

The God of Jacob is our refuge. Pf. xlvi. 11. ·
A man fhall be a hiding place. If. xxxii. 2.
In the Shadow of thy wings will I make my refuge,
until thefe calamities be overpast. Pf. lvii. 1.

1

JESUS, lover of my foul,

Let me to thy bofom fly,

While the billows near me roll,
While the tempeft ftill is high!
Hide me, O my Saviour, hide,
Till the ftorm of life be paft;
Safe into the haven guide,
And receive my soul at last.

2 Other refuge have I none,
Hangs my helpless foul on thee:
Leave, O leave me not alone!
Still fupport and comfort me:
All my trust on thee is stay'd;
All my help from thee I bring;
Cover my defenceless head

With the shadow of thy wing.

3. Thou, O Chrift, art all I want; Ev'ry good in thee I find :

4

Thou canft cheer my foul when faint,
Ease the anguish of my mind.
Juft and holy is thy name-

I am all

unrighteousness; Vile, and full of fin, I am

Thou art full of truth and grace.

Plenteous grace with thee is found,
Grace to pardon all my fin:

within:

Let the healing streams abound;
Make and keep me pure
Thou of life the Fountain art;
Freely let me take of thee;
Spring thou up within my heart;
Rife to all eternity!

In this tabernacle we do groan. 2 Cor. v. 4.
If need be ye are in heaviness. 1 Pet. i. 6, 7.
All things work together for good. Rom. viii. 28.

I ST
TREAMS of bitternefs and wo
Through this thorny defert flow;
Here my portion's to complain,
Weep o'er fin, and weep again;
Here my faith, like gold when tried,
Muft the fiery test abide:

What can keep me? Jefu's love,
And his grace fent from above.

2 Jefus does my fears controul,
And revive my drooping foul;
He my ev'ry need fupplies;
He a fov'reign balm applies;
Secretly he whispers peace,
Promifes a fure release.

Trials, when they're understood,"
Will be found to work for good.

1 MY times of forrow and of joy,
Great God, are in thy hand;

My choiceft comforts came from thee,
And go at thy command,

2 If thou fhouldft take them all away,
Yet let me not repine:
Before they were poffeft by me
They were entirely thine.

3 Let me not drop a murm'ring word,
Though earthly joys be gone,

But feek enduring happiness

In thee, and thee alone.

4 What is the world, and all things here?
'Tis but a bitter sweet:

When I attempt a rose to pluck,
A pricking thorn I meet,

5 Here perfect blifs can ne'er be found:
The honey's mixt with gall:
'Midft changing scenes and dying friends,
Be thou my all in all.

Comfort in Afflictions.

My foul refused to be comforted. Pf. lxxvii. 2.
My Spirit was overwhelmed. 3.

This is my infirmity—but I will remember the years of the right hand of the Most High. P İxxvii. 10.

QUESTION.

UST it, dear Lord, be fo?
And muft thy children bear
Such various kinds of wo,
Such foul-perplexing fear?

Is this the lot of thine elect?
Are these the bleffings we expect?

ANSWER.

2 How harsh foe'er the

way,

The Saviour ftill leads on;
And will enable you to say—

"Father, thy will be done!"
At most we do but tafte the cup;
'Twas he alone who drank it up.
