old work, entitled "Barton's Centuries of Select Hymns," which is often full of rude vigour— several are wholly, or in part, borrowed from the versions of Archdeacon Hare, Mr. Keble, and the late Mr. Lyte; for some of the very best I am indebted to Mr. Montgomery.

By his kind permission, and that of the representatives of Mr. Lyte, and the late Bishop Heber, my Selection of Hymns has been enriched with many of the noblest, extant in the English language.

I would hope, that this attempt to frame a volume, not altogether unsuitable to our Liturgy, may be in some degree successful; this, at least, I am sure of that, in a small compass, there are here brought together many spiritual songs, that Saints, and Apostles would not have disdained to use, whilst learning in this world the language of the spirits in Paradise.
