Great God of hosts, their God, and ours,
Our only Lord, and King,

Let that right arm which wrought for them,
To us deliverance bring.

PSALM 45.

OH fairer than the sons of men,
Thy lips with grace run o'er,
Therefore shall God upon thee rain
Fresh blessings evermore.

Gird then Thy sword upon Thy thigh,
Go forth upon Thy way,
Meekness, and truth, and equity,
The strength of Thine array.

Thou art anointed to the fight,
Sure is Thine arm, and strong,
Thou shalt do battle for the right,
And scatter guile, and wrong.

Thine is an everlasting throne,
Set up in righteousness,

Therefore to Thee shall kings bow down,
Their realms Thy sway confess.

All generations of the earth,

Thy praises shall record,

Thy name to every clime go forth,

World without end adored.

PSALM 46.

GOD is our refuge, tried, and proved,
Amid a stormy world:

We will not fear, though earth be moved,
And hills in ocean hurled.

The waves may roar, the mountains shake,
Our succours shall not cease,

The Lord his saints will not forsake,
The Lord will give us peace.

A gentle stream of hope, and love,
To us shall ever flow;

It issues from His throne above;
It cheers His church below.

When earth, and hell against us came,

He spake, and quelled their powers, The Lord of Hosts is still the same, The God of grace is ours.

PSALM 46.

Second Version.

GOD is our refuge, and defence,
In trouble our unfailing aid:

Secure in His omnipotence,

What foe can make our souls afraid?

Yea, though the earth's foundations rock, And mountain's down the gulf be hurled,

His people smile amid the shock;

They look beyond this transient world.

There is a river, pure, and bright,

Whose streams make glad the heavenly plains; Where, in eternity of light,

The city of our God remains.

Built by the word of His command,
With His unclouded presence blest;
Firm as His throne, the bulwarks stand,
There is our home, our hope, our rest.

PSALM 47.

EXTOL the Lord, the Lord most high,
King over all the earth;
Exalt His triumphs to the sky,
In songs of sacred mirth.

Wheree'er the sea-ward rivers run,

His banner shall advance,
And every realm beneath the sun
Be His inheritance.

God is gone up with loud acclaim,
And trumpets tuneful voice,

Sing praise, sing praises to His name,

Sing praises, and rejoice.

Sing praises to our God, sing praise

To every creature's King,

His wondrous works, His glorious ways,
All tongues, all kindreds sing.

God sits upon His holy throne;
God o'er the heathen reigns;
His truth thro' all the world is known,
That truth His throne sustains.

Princes around His footstool, throng,
Kings, in the dust adore,

Earth, and her shields to God belong;
Sing praises evermore.

PSALM 47.

Second Version.

Oн clap your hands, ye people, all,
And shout with songs of mirth;
In worship at God's footstool fall,
Know, that He rules on earth.

The heritage He'll chuse for us,
Earth's fairest far above,
The heritage of Jacob's house,
Which He vouchsafes to love.

God is gone up with merry shout,
And trumpet sounding high;
Oh lift your voices, and sing out
His praises to the sky.

Conquest, and might to Him belong,

Who shall His will gainsay?

Earth, and her princes round Him throng, He is their shield, and stay.

PSALM 48.

POUR ye your songs of praise abroad
Unto the Lord on high,
Here in the city of our God,
And in His sanctu❜ry.

Mount Zion is a beauteous place,

The joy of Israel;

There is the shining of God's face,

There He delights to dwell.

He in her palaces is known,
A refuge, near at hand,
Kings, that beleaguered her are flown,
A panic-stricken band.

He that over Salem's towers

From age to age keeps ward, This God of Jacob still is ours, In life, and death our guard.

PSALM 51.

HAVE mercy on me, O my God,

In loving-kindness hear my prayer; Withdraw the terrors of Thy rod, Lord, in Thy tender mercy, spare.

Offences rise wheree'er I look,

But I confess their guilt to Thee, Blot my transgressions from Thy book, Cleanse me from mine iniquity.
