1. Now, when the dusk y shades of night, re treating
2 To Thee, whose word, the fount of life unsealing, When hill and dale in thickest darkness lay, Awoke bright rays across the dim earth stealing, And bade the eve and morn complete the day.
3 Look from the height of heaven and send to cheer us Thy light and truth, and guide us onward still; Still let Thy mercy, as of old, be near us, And lead us safely to Thy holy hill.
4 So, when that morn of endless light is waking, And shades of evil from its splendors flee, Safe may we rise, this earth's dark vale forsaking, Through all the long bright day to dwell with Thee.
5 Be this by Thee, O God thrice holy, granted, O Father, Son, and Spirit, ever blest;
Whose glory by the heaven and earth is chanted, Whose name by men and angels is confest.
2 Whene'er the sweet church bell Peals over hill and dell
May Jesus Christ be praised! Oh, hark to what it sings, As joyously it rings,
May Jesus Christ be praised! 3 My tongue shall never tire Of chanting with the choir, May Jesus Christ be praised! This song of sacred joy, It never seems to cloy,
May Jesus Christ be praised!
4 When sleep her balm denies, My silent spirit sighs,
May Jesus Christ be praised! When evil thoughts molest, With this I shield my breast,
May Jesus Christ be praised!
5 Does sadness fill my mind? A solace here I find,
May Jesus Christ be praised!
Or fades my earthly bliss, My comfort still is this,
May Jesus Christ be praised! 6 The night becomes as day, When from the heart we say, May Jesus Christ be praised! The powers of darkness fear, When this sweet chant they hear, May Jesus Christ be praised!
7 In heaven's eternal bliss The loveliest strain is this,
May Jesus Christ be praised! Let earth, and sea, and sky From depth to height reply,
May Jesus Christ be praised! 8 Be this, while life is mine, My canticle divine,
May Jesus Christ be praised! Be this the eternal song Through ages all along, May Jesus Christ be praised!
2 Swift to its close ebbs out life's little day; Earth's joys grow dim, its glories pass away; Change and decay in all around I see:
O Thou who changest not, abide with me!
3 I need Thy presence every passing hour: What but Thy grace can foil the tempter's power? Who like Thyself my guide and stay can be? Through cloud and sunshine, oh, abide with me!
4 I fear no foe, with Thee at hand to bless; Ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness. Where is death's sting? where, grave, thy victory! I triumph still, if Thou abide with me.
5 Hold Thou Thy cross before my closing eyes;
Shine through the gloom, and point me to the skies. Heaven's morning breaks, and earth's vain shadows flee- In life, in death, O Lord, abide with me!
3 Let holy thoughts be ours when sleep o'ertakes us; Our earliest thoughts be Thine when morning wakes us. All sick and mourners we to Thee commend them,
4 We have no refuge, none on earth to aid us But Thee, O Father, who Thine own hast made us. Keep us in life; forgive our sins; deliver
5 Praise be to Thee through Jesus our salvation, God, Three in One, the ruler of creation, High throned, o'er all Thine eye of mercy casting, Lord everlasting.
Oh, in what di-vers pains they met! Oh, with what joy they went away!
