SECTION XIV.

Comment on Jacob's blessing on Judah.

We find every particular, in the figurative prophecy contained in the blessing of Jacob upon his fourth son Judah, either confirmed by the prophets, who lived many hundred years after, or realized by histo rical facts. The pre-eminence of Judah over the other tribes is remarkable throughout the whole of their history. During their wandering in the wilderness, on their march to the promised land, the camp of Judah was pitched "towards the rising sun," and when the tents were struck, they "set forth first." After the ten tribes had revolted, "the men of Israel fled before Judah, and God delivered them into their hand." The prophet Micah confirmed that which Jacob had declared-namely, that " their hand should be in the neck of their enemies." In their intestine wars, and even in their captivity, the ascendancy of the tribe of Judah was maintained.
