HISTORY OF THE WORLD

FROM THE

EARLIEST PERIOD TO THE PRESENT TIME.

COLLECTED AND ARRANGED FROM THE BEST AUTHORITIES.

BY EVERT A. DUYCKINCK,

AUTHOR OF "NATIONAL PORTRAIT GALLERY OF EMINENT AMERICANS," "CYCLOPEDIA OF AMERIcan Literature," ETC. Illustrated with Sixty-one HIGHLY-FINISHED Steel Engravings of Historical Events and Portraits of Eminent Men, from original paintings by ALONZO CHAPPEL and

other American and Foreign Artists.

HIS work has been prepared for the purpose of furnishing the reader with a complete and accurate HISTORY OF THE WORLD. It has been undertaken with a view to the entertainment and instruction of the largest number of readers: to satisfy curiosity on all important points of historical research, and present in a form worthy of preservation what may be considered the permanent annals of the race. For this purpose recourse has been had to the best authorities; the work being based on the historical portions of the latest edition of the Encyclopædia Britannica. Other sources have also been drawn upon, and the American portion, especially in the large section relating to the United States, has been written expressly for this work by the REV. DR. J. A. SPENCER, author of various popular historical works. Altogether the work embraces the results of the labors of the best scholars, and may be confidently commended as supplying a want long felt in the literature of the day. Beginning with the earliest annals, the progress of the human race in history is traced from its earliest seats in the East, through the great geographical divisions of the world—Asia, Africa, Europe and America. A history of the world is given by countries and nations, following a narrative method, which is the most agreeable to the reader, and most convenient for reference.
