2 Soon as the ev'ning shades prevail,
The moon takes up the wondrous tale,
And nightly to the list'ning earth,
Repeats the story of her birth;

Whilst all the stars that round her burn,
And all the planets in their turn,
Confirm the tidings as they roll,

And spread the truth from pole to pole.
3 What, though in solemn silence all
Move round the dark terrestrial ball;
What, though no real voice or sound,
Amid their radiant orbs be found;
In reason's ear they all rejoice,
And utter forth a glorious voice;
For ever singing, as they shine,
"The hand that made us is divine."

PSALM XX. (L. M.) Luke Slov

1 NOW may the God of power and grace
Attend his people's humble cry!
Jehovah hears when Israel prays,
And brings deliverance from on high.
2 The name of Jacob's God defends,
Better than shields or brazen walls;
He from his sanctuary sends

Succour and strength, when Zion calls.
3 Well he remembers all our sighs,
His love exceeds our best deserts;
His love accepts the sacrifice

Of humble groans and broken hearts.

4 Some trust in horses train'd for war, And some of chariots make their boast; Our surest expectations are

From thee, the Lord of heavenly host.

5 Now save us, Lord, from slavish fear,
Now let our hopes be firm and strong,
Till thy salvation shall appear,
And joy and triumph raise the song.

PSALM XXIII. (L. M. 6's.)

1 THE Lord my pasture shall prepare,
And feed me with a Shepherd's care;
His presence shall my wants supply,
And guard me with a watchful eye;
My noonday walks he shall attend,
And all my midnight hours defend.
2 When in the sultry glebe I faint,
Or on the thirsty mountain pant,
To fertile vales and dewy meads,
My weary wand'ring steps he leads;
Where peaceful rivers, soft and slow,
Amid the verdant landscape flow.

3 Though in the paths of death I tread,
With gloomy horrors overspread,
My stedfast heart shall fear no ill,
For thou, O Lord, art with me still:
Thy friendly crook shall give me aid,
And guide me through the dreadful shade.

4 Though in a bare and rugged way,
Through devious lonely wilds I stray,
Thy bounty shall my pains beguile;
The barren wilderness shall smile,
With sudden greens and herbage crown'd,
And streams shall murmur all around.

1 ERECT your heads, eternal gates,
Unfold to entertain

The King of glory; see, he comes,
With his celestial train.

2 Who is the King of glory? who?
The Lord for strength renown'd:
In battle mighty, o'er his foes
Eternal victor crown'd.

3 Erect your heads, ye gates, unfold
In state to entertain

The King of glory; see, he comes,
With all his shining train.

4 Who is the King of glory? who?
The Lord of hosts renown'd;

Of glory he alone is King,
Who is with glory crown'd.

PSALM XXV. (s. M.) and

MINE eyes and my desire

Are ever to the Lord;

I love to plead his promises,

And rest upon his word.

2 When shall the sov'reign grace, Of my forgiving God,

3

Restore me from those dangʼrous ways,
My wand'ring feet have trod?

O keep my soul from death,
Nor put my hope to shame,
For I have plac'd my only trust
In my Redeemer's name.

4 With humble faith I wait
To see thy face again;
Of Israel it shall ne'er be said,
He sought the Lord in vain,

1 O LORD, our guard, our light, our way,
What dangers shall our souls dismay !
God of our life! whom need we fear,
When foes assault, if thou art near?

2 One wish, with holy transport warm,
Our hearts have form'd, and yet shall form;
One thing we ask ;-to spend our days
In Zion's courts, with prayer and praise.

3 Though ev'ry earthly friend depart,
And love forsake a parent's heart,
The Lord, on whom our hopes depend,
Will prove a Father and a friend.
4 Ye trembling saints! in ey'ry strait,
On God with sacred courage wait;
His grace will life and strength afford;
O wait, then, daily on the Lord.

PSALM XXVIII. (7's.)

1 LORD, my strength, to thee I pray,
Turn not thou thine ear away;
Gracious to my vows attend,
While the humble knee I bend.

2 On thy long expected aid

See my hope for ever stay'd:
Thou my shield, my fortress art;
Thou, the refuge of my heart.

3 Grant me, Lord, thy love to share,
Feed me with a shepherd's care;
Save thy people from distress,
And thy fold for ever bless.

PSALM XXX. (c. м.)

1 I'LL celebrate thy praises, Lord,
Who didst thy pow'r employ,
To raise my drooping head, and check
My foes' insulting joy.
