In this our strong tower,
For safety we hide,
The Lord is our power,
"The Lord will provide."

100, Hebrews xii, 22—23. (c. M.)

1 LET saints below in concert sing,
With those to glory gone;
For all the servants of our King,
In heav'n and earth are one!

2 One family we dwell in him,

One church above, beneath;
Though now divided by the stream,
The narrow stream of death!

3 One army of the living God,
To his command we bow:

Part of the host have cross'd the flood,
And part are crossing now.

4 O Jesus, be our constant guide,
Then when the word is giv'n,
Bid Jordan's narrow stream divide,
And land us safe in heav'n.

Psalm xx, 7. (C. M.)

1 REMEMBER thee! remember Christ!
While mem'ry holds her place,
Can we forget the Lord of life,
Who saves us by his grace?

2 His glory now, no tongue of man, Or seraph bright can tell;

Yet still the chief of all his joys,

That souls are sav'd from hell!

3 For this he came, and dwelt on earth,
For this his life was giv'n,

For this he fought, and vanquish'd death,
For this he pleads in heav'n!

4 Join all ye saints beneath the sky,
Your grateful praise to give;
Sing loud hosannas to the Lord,
Who died, that you might live!

Ephesians vi, 18. (L. M.)

1 WHAT various hindrances we meet,
In coming to a mercy-seat;

Yet, who that knows the worth of pray'r,
But wishes to be often there!

2 Pray'r makes the darken'd cloud withdraw;
Pray'r climbs the ladder Jacob saw:
Gives exercise to faith and love,
Brings every blessing from above!

3 Restraining pray'r, we cease to fight;
Pray'r makes the christian's armour bright:
And Satan trembles when he sees
The weakest saint upon his knees.

[blocks in formation]

1 THROUGH all the dangers of the night,
Preserv'd, O Lord, by thee:
Again we hail the cheerful light,
Again we bow the knee.

2 Preserve us, Lord, throughout the day,
And guide us by thine arm:
For they are safe, and only they,
Whom thou preserv'st from harm.

3 Let all our words, and all our ways,
Declare that we are thine,

That so the light of truth and grace,
Before the world may shine.

4 Let us ne'er turn away from thee,
But, Saviour, hold us fast,
Till with immortal eyes we see
Thy glorious face at last.

Psalm lxxxiv. (P. M.)

1 HOW honour'd, how dear,

That sacred abode,

Where christians draw near

Their Father and God:
Mid worldly commotion,
My wearied soul faints,
For the house of devotion,
The home of thy saints.

2 O happy the choirs,

Who praise thee above!
What joy tunes their lyres!
Their worship is love:
Yet safe in thy keeping,
And happy they be,
In this world of weeping,
Whose strength is in thee!

3 Though rugged their way,
They drink, as they go,
Of springs that convey
New life as they flow:
The God they rely on,

105

Their strength shall renew,
Till each brought to Zion,
His glory shall view.

Lamentations iii, 24. (c. M.)

1 FROM day to day while others roam, And search in vain for bliss,

My soul is satisfied at home;
The Lord my portion is.

2 Jesus, who on a glorious throne
Rules heav'n, and earth, and sea,
Is pleas'd to claim me for his own,
And give himself to me.

3 His person fixes all my love,
His blood removes my fear;

And while he pleads for me above,
His arm preserves me here.

4 His word of promise is my food,
His Spirit is my guide;

Thus daily are my hopes renew'd,
And all my wants supplied.

5 For him I count as gain each loss,
Disgrace for him renown:

Well may I glory in his cross,
While he prepares my crown !

Hebrews iv, 15. (L. M. 6's.)

1 WHEN gath'ring clouds around I view,
And days are dark, and friends are few,
On him I lean, who, not in vain,
Experienc'd every human pain;

He sees my wants, allays my fears,
And counts and treasures up my tears.

2 If aught should tempt my soul to stray
From heav'nly wisdom's narrow way;
To flee the good I would pursue,
Or do the thing I would not do;
Still he, who felt temptation's power,
Shall guard me in that dangerous hour.
3 When anxious thoughts within me rise,
And, sore dismay'd, my spirit dies,
Then he, who once vouchsaf'd to bear
The bitter anguish of despair,

Shall sweetly soothe, shall gently dry,
The throbbing heart, the streaming eye.
