The intent of a settled ministry.

The line of Levi, and the offices to be performed by the several branches of his family, are set down in these chronicles with more than common care; this tribe having been appointed by the Lord to minister in holy things. This made it most desirable, that their genealogies should be preserved; since otherwise the people would have had no evidence that their priests ministered with authority derived to them from God. Their cities also are here enumerated. For on the return of the people from captivity, there was nothing which more concerned their own interests, than that they should have the members of this consecrated family settled amongst them in all quarters as before. There is a resemblance in both these points, between the institutions of the Law, and those of our own land under the Gospel, for which we all owe great thanks to God. Our ministers according to the model left by the apostles have an outward visible appointment, as well as an inward spiritual call. They derive authority from our Lord, through each other in succession. And they have places assigned for them to dwell in, throughout the length and breadth of the land; with the intent, that every member of the state should be a member also of the church, and that every member of the church should have the benefit of a minister nigh at hand, to dispense to him, as a faithful steward, the word and sacraments of God. God be praised for these blessings, so far as they are now realized! God grant that they may be speedily carried out to their fullest possible extent!

The imperfections of these genealogies.

In these chapters there are no genealogies of the tribes of Simeon, Dan, and Zebulon. Probably they had been lost through carelessness. And as God has been pleased to use in his revelation man's imperfect language, so He vouchsafed, for the benefit of his chosen people, to incorporate into his book their imperfect records. This stamps them with infallible authority, as far as they extend. It does not render them of necessity complete.
