LESSON XI.

The Duties of Parents and Children.

Ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath; but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. Eph. v. 4.

Chaften, thy fon while there is hope; and let not thy foul fpare for his crying. Prov. xix. 18. Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it. Prov. xxii. 20.

God commanded, faying, honour thy father and mother. Matt. xv. 4.

Children, obey your parents in the Lord; for this is right. Eph. vi. 1.

Whofo curfeth his father or his mother, his lamp fhall be put out in obfcure dark nefs. Prov.

Servants, be obedient to them that are your mafters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in finglenefs of your heart, as unto Chrift.

-Not with eye-fervice, as men-pleafers, but as the fervants of Chrift, doing the will of God. from the heart. Eph. vi. 5, 6.

Exhort fervants to be obedient unto their own masters, and to please them well in all things; not answering again,

-Not purloining, but fhewing all good fidelity; that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things. Titus ii. 9, 10% LESSON XIII. The Duty of Subjects.

Let every foul be fubject unto the higher powers. Rom. xiii. 1.

Put them in mind to be fubject to principalities and powers; to obey magiftrates, to be ready to every good work. Titus. iii. r.

Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's fake; whether it be to the king, as fupreme; or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him, for the punishment of evil doers, and for the praife of them that do well. 1 Pet. . 13, 14.

Fear thou the Lord, and the king; and meddle not with them that are given to change. Prov. xxiv. 21.

Whofoever shall not do the law of thy God, and the law of the king, let judgment be executed fpeedily upon him, whether it be unto death, or to banishment, or to confifcation of goods, or to imprifonment. Ezra vii. 261.

The Duty of Chriftian Believers towards their Minifters.

Obey them that have the rule over you, and fubmit yourselves, for they watch for your fouls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief. Heb.

xiii. 17.

Let the elders that rule well be accounted worthy of double honour; especially they who labour in the word and doctrine. I Tim. v. 17.

We beseech you, brethren, to know them which labour among you, and are over you in the Lord; and admonish you;

-And to esteem them very highly in love for their work's fake. 1 Theff. v. 12, 13..

LESSON I.

Humility.

Bis the kingdom of heaven. Matt. v. 3.

LESSED are the poor in fpirit, for theirs

Whosoever fhall humble himself as a little child, the fame is the greateft in the kingdom of heaven. Matt. xviii. 4.

Though the Lord be high, yet hath he respect unto the lowly; as for the proud, he beholdeth them afar off. Pfal. cxxxviii. 6.

When

When pride cometh, then cometh fhame: but with the lowly is wisdom. Prov. xi. 2.

A man's pride fhall bring him low; but honour shall uphold the humble in spirit. Prov. xxix. 23.

Before deftruction the heart of man is haughty; and before honour is humility. Prov.

xviii. 12.

God refifteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. James iv. 6.

Learn of me, (faith our Saviour) for I am meek and lowly in heart, and ye fhall find rest unto your fouls. Matt. xi. 29.

Be ye angry, and fin not; let not the fun go down upon your wrath;

Neither give place to the devil. Eph. iv. 26, 27

Be not hafty in thy fpirit to be angry; for anger refteth in the bofom of fools. Eccl. vii. 9. Let every man be swift to hear, flow to speak, flow to wrath:

-For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God. James i. 19, 20.

Them that are meek, fhall he guide in judgment; and fuch as are gentle, them fhall he learn his way. Pfal. xxv. 8.

Bleffed are the meek, for they fhall inherit the earth. Matt. v. 5.

Temperance.

III.

Take heed to yourselves, left at any time your hearts be overcharged with furfeiting and drunkenness. Luke xxi. 34.

They that be drunken are drunken in the

night.

-But let us who are of the day be fober. 1 Theff. v. 7, 8.

Let us walk honeftly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness. Rom. xii. 13.

: Wine is a mocker; ftrong drink is raging; and whofoever is deceived thereby, is not wife. Prov. xx. I.

Be not amongft wine-bibbers; amongst riotous eaters of flesh. Prov. xxiii. 20.

Be not drunk with ftrong wine, wherein is excefs. Eph. v. 18.

LESSON IV.

Chastity and Modesty.

Dearly beloved, I beseech you, as ftrangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lufts, which war against the soul. 1 Pet. ii. 11.

Fornication and all uncleanness, let it not be once named amongst you, as becometh faints: -Neither filthinefs, nor foolish talking, nor jefting, which are not convenient.

-This ye know, that no, whoremonger, nor unclean perfon, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Chrift and of God. Eph. V. 3, 4, 5..

God hath not called us unto uncleannefs, but unto holiness. 1 Theff. iv. 7.

Bleffed are the pure in heart, for they shall fee God. Matt. v. 8.
