MANY: [L.] becaufe many Devils were entered into him. [Mr.] And he befought him much that he would not fend them away out of the Country, and [L.] that he would not command them to go out into the Deep. [M] And there was a good way off from them, [Mr.] nigh unto the Mountains, a great Herd [M] of many [L.] Swine feeding on the Mountain : [Mr.] And all the Devils befought him, faying, [M.] If thou caft us out, fuffer us to go away into the Herd of Swine. [Mr.] And forthwith Jefus gave them Leave; and he faid unto them, Go; and the unclean Spirits, L. Devils, went out of the Man, [Mr.] and entred into the Swine: [M] and behold, the whole Herd of Swine ran violently down a fleep Place into the Sea, and perished in the Waters. [Mr.] They were about two thoufand, and were choked in the Sea. [L.] When they that fed [Mr.] the Swine [L.] faw what was done, they fled, [M] and went their ways into the City, [Mr.] and told it in the City, and in the Country, [M.] and what was befallen to the Poffeffed of DEVILS. And behold, the whole City came out to meet Jefus, [Mr.] and they went out to fee what it was that was done. And they come to Jefus, and fee him that was poffeffed with the DEVIL, [L] and found the Man out of whom the DEVILS were departed, [Mr.] and had the LEGION, fitting, and cloathed, and in his RIGHT MIND, [L.] at the Feet of Jefus, [Mr.] and they were afraid. And they that' faw it, told them how it befel to him that was poffeffed with the Devil, [Z.] by what Means he was made whole; [Mr.] and alfo concerning the Swine. [M] And when they faw him, [L.] then the whole Multitude of the Country of the Gadarenes round about, [Mr.] began to pray him, [M] that he would depart out of their Coafts; [Z.] for they were taken with great Fear. And he went up into the Ship, and returned back again : [Mr.] And when he was come into the Ship, he that had been poffeffed with the Devil, [L.] the Man out of whom the Devils were DEPARTED, befought him that he might be WITH HIM. [Mr.] Howbeit, Jefus fuffered him not, [.] but fent him away, faying, Return to thine own Houfe, [Mr.] to thy Friends, and SHEW how GREAT THINGS the LORD [L.] GOD [Mr.] hath done for thee, and hath had COMPASSION on thee. [L.] And he went his way, and published throughout the whole City, [Mr.] and began to publifh in Decapolis, how GREAT THINGS Jefus had done for him: And all Men did marvel.

A dumb Man poffeffed of a Devil, is bealed.

Matt. ix. AS S they went out, behold, they brought to 32, 33. him a DUMB Man poffeffed with a Devil. And when the Devil was caft out, the Dumb SPAKE, and the Multitudes marvelled, faying, It was NEVER fo SEEN in Ifrael.

CHRIST caftetha Devil out of a lunatick Man, which the Difciples could not caft

out.

Luke ix. 37. Mark ix. 14. Matt. xvii. 14. [LAND it came to pafs, that on the next Day, when they were come down from the Hill, [Mr.] and when he came to his Difciples, he faw a great Multitude about them, and the Scribes queftioning with them. And ftraightway all the People, when they beheld him, were greatly amazed and [Z.] much People met him, [Mr.] and running to him, faluted him. [M] And when they were come to the Multitude, [Mr.] he asked the Scribes, What question ye with them? [L.] And behold, [M.] there came to him a certain Man L.] of the Company [M] kneeling down to him, and he [Mr.] answered and [M] cried out, faying, [M] Lord, [Mr.] Master, I have brought unto thee my Son, which hath a dumb SPIRIT: [Z.] I befeech thee look upon my Son, for he is mine only Child: [M.] Have Mercy on my Son, for he is lunatick, and fore vexed: for oft-times he falleth into the Fire, and oft into the Water; [L.] and lo, a SPIRIT taketh him; [Mr.] and wherefoever he taketh him, [Z.] he fuddenly CRIETH out, and he TEARETH him, that he FOAMETH again; [Mr.] and gnafheth with his Teeth, and pineth away; [L] and BRUISING him, hardly DEPARTETH from him. [1] And I brought him to thy Difciples, [L.] and I be

fought thy Difciples to caft him out, [Mr.] and I fpake to thy Difciples that they fhould caft him out, and they could not [M] cure him. Then Jefus answered and faid, O FAITHLESS and perverfe Generation, how long fhall í be with you? how long fhall I fuffer you? Bring him, [Z.] thy Son hither [Mr.] unto me. And they brought him unto him: [Z.] And as he was yet a coming, [Mr.] and when he faw him, ftraightway [L.] the Devil threw him down, and tare him; [Mr.] and he fell on the Ground, and wallowed, foaming. And he afked his Father, How long is it ago fince this came unto him? And he said, Of a Child : And oft-times it hath caft him into the FIRE, and into the WATERS to DESTROY him. But if thou canst do thing, have COMPASSION upon us, and help us. Fefus faid unto him, If thou canst BELIEVE, all Things are POSSIBLE to him that BELIEVETH. And ftraightway the Father of the Child cried out, Lord, I BELIEVE; help thou mine Unbelief. When Jefus faw that the People came running together, he REBUKED the FOUL SPIRIT, faying unto him, Thou dumb and deaf Spirit, I charge thee come out of him, and enter no more into him. And the SPIRIT cried, and RENT him fore, and came out of him: and he was as one DEAD; infomuch that many faid, He is dead. But Fefus took him by the Hand, and lifted him up, [L.] and healed the Child, [Mr.] and he arofe: [M] and the Child was CURED from that very Hour, [Z.] and he delivered him again unto his Father. And they were all AMAZED at the MIGHTY POWER of GOD. [Mr.] And when he was come into the Houfe, [M] then came [Mr.] his Difciples [M.] to Jefus apart, [Mr.] and asked him privately, [M] and faid, Why could not we CAST him out? And Jefus faid unto them, Because of your UNBELIEF: for verily I fay unto you, If you have FAITH as a Grain of Mustard-feed, ye fhall fay unto this Mountain, Remove hence to yonder Place, and it fhall remove; and nothing fhall be unpoffible unto you. Howbeit this Kind [Mr.] can come forth by nothing but by PRAYER and FASTING.

CHRIST cafts out a Devil; and confirms it to be done by a Divine Power.

xi. 14.

Luke AND he was cafting out a DEVIL, and it was DUMB. And it came to pafs when the DEVIL was gone out, the DUMB fpake: and the People wondred. But fome of them faid, He cafteth out Devils through Beelzebub, the Chief of the Devils. And others tempting him, fought of him a Sign from Heaven. But he KNOWING their THOUGHTS, faid unto them, Every Kingdom divided against itself is brought to Defolation: and a Houfe divided against a Houfe, falleth. If SATAN also be divided against himself, how fhall his Kingdom stand? Because ye fay that I caft out Devils through Beelzebub. And if I by Beelzebub caft out Devils, by whom do your Sons caft them out? Therefore fhall they be your Judges. But if I with the FINGER of GOD caft out Devils, no doubt the KINGDOM of GOD is come upon you. When a ftrong Man armed keepeth his Palace, his Goods are in Peace. But when a stronger than he fhall come upon him, and overcome him, he taketh from him all his Armour wherein he trufted, and divideth his Spoils. He that is not with me, is against me; and he that gathereth not with me, fcattereth. (a) When the unclean Spirit is gone out of a Man, he walketh through dry Places, feeking Reft and finding none, he faith, I will return unto my Houfe whence I came out. And when he cometh, he findeth it fwept and garnished. Then goeth he, and taketh to him feven other Spirits more wicked than himfelf, and they enter in, and dwell there: And the laft State of that Man is worfe than the first.

And when the People were gathered thick together, he began to fay, This is an evil Generation: they feek a Sign, and there fhall no Sign be given it, but the Sign of Jonas the Prophet. For as Jonas was a Sign unto the Ninevites, fo fhall alfo the Son of Man be to this Generation. (a) The Queen of the South fhall rife up in Judgment with the Men of this Generation, and condemn them: for fhe came from the utmoft Parts of the Earth to hear the Wisdom of Solomon; and behold, a greater than Solomon is here. The Men of Nineve fhall rife up in JUDGMENT with this Generation, and fhall condemn it for they REPENTED at the Preaching of Fonas; and behold, a greater than Jonas is here.
