38. Jefus therefore again groaning in himself, cometh to the Grave. It was a Cave, and a Stone lay upon it. 39. Jefus faid, Take ye away the Stone. Martha, the Sifter of him that was dead, faith unto him, Lord, by this time he STINKETH: for he hath been dead FOUR Days. 40. Jefus faith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that if thou wouldst BELIEVE, thou fhouldft fee the GLORY of God? 41. Then they took away the Stone from the Place where the DEAD was laid. And Jefus LIFT up his EYES, and faid, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me. 42. And I knew that thou heareft me always: but becaufe of the People which ftand by, I faid it, that they may BELIEVE that thou haft SENT me. 43. And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud Voice, Lazarus, COME FORTH. 44. And he that was DEAD came forth, bound Hand and Foot with Grave-clothes: and his Face was bound about with a Napkin. Jefus faith unto them, Loose him, and let him go. 45. Then many of the Jews which came to Mary, and had feen the Things which Jefus did, BELIEVED on him. 46. But fome of them went their ways to the PHARISEES, and told them what Things Fefus had done. 47. Then (a) gathered the Chief Priefts and the Pharifees a COUNCIL, and faid, What do we? for this Man doth many MIRACLES. (a) Pfal. ii. 1. Why do the Heathen RAGE, and the People imagine a VAIN THING? 2. The Kings of the Earth fet themselves, and the Rulers take COUNSEL together, against the LORD, and against his ANOINTED. 48. If we let him thus alone, all Men will BELIEVE on him; and the Romans shall come, and take away both our Place and Nation. 49. And one of them named Caiaphas, being the HIGH PRIEST that fame Year, faid unto them, Ye know nothing at all, 50. Nor confider that it is expedient for us, that one MAN fhould DIE for the People, and that the whole Nation perish not. 51. And this fpake he not of HIMSELF: but being HIGH PRIEST that Year, he prophefied that Jesus should die for that Nation : 52. And not for that NATION only, but that alfo he fhould gather together in one, the Children of God that were SCATTERED abroad. 53. Then 53. Then from that Day forth, they took COUNSEL together for to put him to Death. 54. Jefus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews; but went thence unto a Country near to the Wildernefs, into a City called Ephraim, and there continued with his Difciples. 55. And the Jews Paffover was nigh at hand: and many went out of the Country up to Jerufalem before the Paffover, to purify themselves. 56. Then fought they for Jefus, and spake among themfelves, as they flood in the Temple, What think ye, that he will not come to the Feast? 57. Now both the Chief Priefts and the Pharifees had given a Commandment, that if any Man knew where he were, he fhould fhew it, that they might TAKE him. CHRIST, CHRIST, by divers PARABLES, represents the fpiritual Nature of his Kingdom: Many of which are explained, and applied to their just and spiritual Meaning by Our SAVIOUR himself, and to which many Places in the NEW TESTAMENT refer. CHRIST'S Parabolical Sermon to the Multitude by the Sea-fide, of the Sower of Seed, with the Explanation of it. Matt. xiii. I. Mark iv. 1. Luke viii. 4. T [M.] HE fame Day went Jefus out of the Houfe, and fat by the Sea-fide. [L.] And when much People were gathered together, and were come to him out of every City, Mr.] he began again to teach by the Sea-fide, [M.] and great Multitudes were gathered together unto him, fo that he went into a Ship, and the whole Multitude stood on the Shore, [Mr.] and was by the Sea on the Land. [M] And he fpake unto them, [Mr.] and taught them many things by PARABLES, and faid unto them, [L.] by a PARABLE, [Mr.] hearken, Behold, there went out a Sower to fow [L.] his Seed: [Mr.] And it came to pass as he fowed, fome fell on the WAY-SIDE, [L.] and it was troden down, [Mr.] and the Fowls of the Air came and devoured it up. And fome fell upon STONY GROUND, where it had not much Earth; and immediately it fprang up, because it had not depth of Earth: [L.] and as foon as it was fprung up [M] it was fcorched, [L.] because it lacked Moisture; [Mr.] and because it had no Root, it withered away. [L.] And fome fell among THORNS, and the Thorns fprang up with it, and choked it, [Mr.] and it yielded no Fruit. [L.] And other fell on GOOD GROUND, and fprang up, and bare Fruit, [Mr.] that fprang up and increafed, and brought forth, fome thirty, and fome fixty, and fome an hundred. [L.] And when he had faid these Things, he cried, and faid unto them, He that hath Ears to hear, let him hear. And when he was alone, [M.] the Difciples came, and faid unto him, Why fpeakeft thou unto them in Parables? [Mr.] And they that were about him, with the Twelve, asked him of the Parable, [Z.] faying, What might this Parable be? [M] And he antwered and faid unto them, because it is given unto you to know the MYSTERIES of the Kingdom of Heaven; but to them it is not given. [Mr.] But all thefe Things are done in Parables, that feeing, they may fee, and not perceive; and hearing, they may hear, and not understand: left at any time they fhould be converted, and their Sins fhould be forgiven. [M] For whofoever hath, to him fhall be given, and he fhall have more Abundance: but whofoever hath not, from him fhall be taken away even that he hath. Therefore fpeak I to them in Parables: because they SEEING, SEE not; and HEARING, they HEAR not, neither do they UNDERSTAND. And in them is ful : filled the Prophecy in Efaias, which faith, By Hearing, ye fhall hear, and fhall not understand: and Seeing, ye fhall fee, and fhall not perceive. For this Peoples Heart is waxed grofs, and their Ears are dull of hearing and their Eyes they have clofed; left at any time they should fee with their Eyes, and hear with their Ears, and fhould understand with their Heart, and fhould be converted, and I fhould heal them. But bleffed are your Eyes, for they fee; and your Ears, for they hear. For verily I fay unto you, that many PROPHETS and RIGHTEOUS Men have defired defired to fee thofe Things which ye fee, and have not feen them; and to hear thofe Things which ye hear, and have not heard them. [Mr.] And he faid unto them, Know ye not this PARABLE? and how then will ye know all Parables? [M.] Hear ye therefore the Parable of the Sower. [L.] Now the Parable is this: [Mr.] The Sower foweth the WORD. [L.] The (a) Seed is the WORD of God. [Mr.] And thefe are they by the Wayfide, [Z.] that hear, [Mr.] where the WORD is fown: but when they have heard, SATAN Cometh immediately, and taketh away the Word that was fown in their Hearts, [L.] out of their Hearts, left they fhould BELIEVE and be SAVED. [M.] When any one heareth the Word of the Kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the WICKED ONE, and catcheth away that which was fown in his Heart: This is he which received Seed by the Way-fide. [Mr.] And thefe are they likewife [M.] that received the Seed in ftony Places; [Mr.] who when they have heard the Word, immediately they receive it with Gladnefs: and have no RooT in themselves, and fo ENDURE but for a Time, [L.] which for a while believe: [Mr.] Afterward, when AFFLICTION (b) or Perfecution arifeth for the Word's fake, immediately they are offended, Lord is perfect, CONVERTING the (a) Pfal. xix. 7.
