HYMNS.

1

A

C. M.

M I a soldier of the cross,
A follower of the Lamb?
And shall I fear to own his cause,
Or blush to speak his name?

2 Must I be carried to the skies
On flowery beds of ease,

While others fought to win the prize,
And sailed through bloody seas?

3 Are there no foes for me to face?
Must I not stem the flood?

Is this vile world a friend to grace,
To help me on to God?

4 Sure I must fight, if I would reign !
Increase my courage, Lord!
I'll bear the toil, endure the pain,
Supported by thy word.

5 Thy saints in all this glorious war,
Shall conquer, though they die;
They view the triumph from afar
And seize it with their eye.

2

6 When that illustrious day shall rise,
And all thy armies shine,

In robes of victory through the skies-
The glory shall be thine.

C. M.

N evil long I took delight,
Unawed by shame or fear;
Till a new object struck my sight,
And stopp'd my wild career.

2 I saw one hanging on a tree,
In agonies and blood;
Who fix'd his languid eyes on me,
As near his cross I stood.

3 Sure never to my latest breath
Can I forget that look;

It seemed to charge me with his death,
Though not a word he spoke.

4 My conscience felt and owned the guilt,
And plunged me in despair;
I saw my sins his blood had spilt,
And help'd to nail him there.

5 A second look he gave, which said,
"I freely all forgive;

This blood is for thy ransom paid;
I die, that thou may'st live."

6 Thus while his death my sin displays
In all its blackest hue,

Such are the mysteries of his grace,
It seals a pardon too.
