THREE LECTURES ON THE Cathedral Service OF THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND. BY THE REV. JOHN JEBB, A.M., RECTOR OF PETERSTOW, HEREFORDSHIRE: LATE PREBENDARY SECOND EDITION, WITH ADDITIONS. Leeds: T. W. GREEN, COMMERCIAL STREET. mdcccxlb. Advertisement TO THE PRESENT EDITION. SOME of the substance, and in a few instances, the very expressions of these Lectures have been repeated in a larger Work by the same Author, "The Choral Service of the Church of England," published since the first Edition of the present Volume, but projected before any intention of delivering them was formed. The object of these Lectures is of a more popular nature, and it has therefore been deemed not unadvisable to repeat the same observations for different classes of readers. The same remarks may apply to some passages in an anonymous Tract by the present Writer, "A Dialogue on the Choral Service." Bedication. TO THE REV. WALTER FARQUHAR HOOK, D.D., MY DEAR SIR, &c., &c. In dedicating these few pages to him at whose desire they originated, I am urged to associate them with your name, not only by the consideration of an hereditary friendship, (a bond hardly less dear than that of kindred,) but also by the recollection of those exertions in the furtherance of Christ's Kingdom, which I had the privilege of witnessing in your person at Leeds, at the time when these Lectures were delivered, and which must claim the good wishes and prayers of every true hearted son of the Church. |
