3 Jesus lives! for me he died,
Hence will I, to Jesus living,
Pure in heart and act abide,
Praise to him and glory giving;
Freely God doth aid dispense;
This shall be my confidence.

4 Jesus lives, I know full well,

Naught me from his love shall sever;
Life, nor death, nor powers of hell,
Part me now from Christ for ever;
God will be a sure defence;
This shall be my confidence.

5 Jesus lives! henceforth is death
But the gate of life immortal;
This shall calm my trembling breath,
When I pass its gloomy portal;
Faith shall cry, as fails each sense,
Lord, thou art my confidence.

Tune 22.

THE Saviour lives, no more to die;
He lives, the Lord enthroned on high;
He lives, triumphant o'er the grave;
He lives, eternally to save.

2 He lives, to still his servants' fears;
He lives, to wipe away their tears;
He lives, their mansions to prepare ;
He lives, to bring them safely there.
3 Ye mourning souls, dry up your tears;
Dismiss your gloomy doubts and fears;
With cheerful hope your hearts revive,
For Christ, the Lord, is yet alive.

4 His saints he loves and never leaves;
The contrite sinner he receives;

7s.

Abundant grace will he afford,
Till all are present with the Lord.

MARY to her Saviour's tomb
Hasted at the early dawn;

Tune 205.

Spice she brought and sweet perfume;
But the Lord she loved was gone.
For awhile she weeping stood,
Struck with sorrow and surprise,
Shedding tears, a plenteous flood,
For her heart supplied her eyes.

2 Jesus, who is always near,

Though too often unperceived,
Came, his drooping child to cheer,
Kindly asking why she grieved;
Though at first she knew him not,
When he called her by her name,
Then her griefs were all forgot,
For she found he was the same.

3 Grief and sighing quickly fled,

When she heard his welcome voice;
Just before, she thought him dead,
Now, he bids her heart rejoice:
What a change his word can make,
Turning darkness into day!
You who weep for Jesus' sake,

He will wipe your tears away.

4 He who came to comfort her,
When she thought her all was lost,
Will for your relief appear,

Though you now are tempest-tost.
On his word your burden cast,
On his love your thoughts employ ;
Weeping for a while may last,
But the morning brings the joy.

ASCENSION AND EXALTATION.

Tune 585.

LOOK, ye saints! the sight is glorious;

66

See the man of sorrows" now!
From the fight returned victorious,
Every knee to him shall bow:
Crown him! crown him!

Crowns become the victor's brow.

2 Crown the Saviour! angels, crown him!
Rich the trophies Jesus brings;
In the seat of power enthrone him,
While the heavenly concave rings:
Crown him! crown him!

Crown the Saviour, "King of kings!"

3 Sinners in derision crowned him,
Mocking thus the Saviour's claim;
Saints and angels crowd around him,
Own his title, praise his name:
Crown him! crown him!
Spread abroad the victor's fame.

4 Hark! those bursts of acclamation!
Hark! those loud, triumphant chords!
Jesus takes the highest station;
Oh! what joy the sight affords!
Crown him! crown him!

8s & 7s.

"King of kings, and Lord of lords."

186.

JESUS, hail! enthroned in glory,
There for ever to abide!

Tune 167.

All the heavenly hosts adore thee,
Seated at thy Father's side:

There for sinners thou art pleading,
There thou dost our place prepare,
Ever for us interceding,

Till in glory we appear.

2 Worship, honor, power and blessing,
Thou art worthy to receive;
Loudest praises without ceasing,
Meet it is for us to give:
When we join the angelic spirits,
In their sweetest, noblest lays,
We will sing our Saviour's merits,
Help to chant Immanuel's praise.

Tune 22.

OUR Lord is risen from the dead;
Our Jesus is gone up on high;
The powers of hell are captive led,
Dragged to the portals of the sky.

2 There his triumphal chariot waits,
And angels chant the solemn lay:
"Lift up your heads, ye heavenly gates!
Ye everlasting doors! give way.

3 "Loose all your bars of massy light,
And wide unfold the ethereal scene;
He claims these mansions as his right;
Receive the King of glory in."

4 "Who is the King of glory?-who?"
"The Lord, that all our foes o'ercame,
The world, sin, death and hell o'erthrew ;
And Jesus is the conqueror's name."

5 Lo! his triumphal chariot waits, And angels chant the solemn lay: "Lift up your heads, ye heavenly gates! Ye everlasting doors! give way."

6 "Who is the King of glory?—who?" "The Lord, of glorious power possessed; The king of saints and angels too; God over all, for ever blessed."

Tune 14.

THE eternal gates lift up their heads,
The doors are opened wide;
The King of glory is gone up
Unto his Father's side.

2 Thou art gone in before us, Lord,
Thou hast prepared a place,
That we may be where now thou art,
And look upon thy face.

3 And ever on thine earthly path
A gleam of glory lies;

A light still breaks behind the cloud
That veils thee from our eyes.

4 Lift up our thoughts, lift up our songs,
And let thy grace be given,
That while we linger yet below,

Our hearts may be in heaven;

5 That where thou art at God's right hand, Our hope, our love may be:

C. M.

Dwell in us now, that we may dwell
For evermore in thee.

[blocks in formation]

THE Lord ascendeth up on high,
Decked with resplendent wounds;
While shouts of victory rend the sky,
And heaven with joy resounds.

2 Eternal gates their leaves unfold,

Receive the conquering king,
