beyond praise.

Father.

'The LORD's voice crieth unto the city, and the man of wisdom shall see thy name: hear ye the rod, and who hath appointed it. 19 Are there yet the treasures of wickedness in the house of the wicked, and the scant measure that is abominable? Shall I count them pure with the wicked balances, and with the bag of deceitful weights? For the rich men thereof are full of violence, and the inhabitants thereof have spoken lies, and their tongue is deceitful in their mouth. Therefore also will I make thee sick in smiting thee, in making thee desolate because of thy sins. "Thou 14 Nothing shall prosper with the shalt eat, but not be satis- wicked. The highest earthly advantages profit not a people, but come to nought, when true religion and piety cease to flourish and abound.

HABAKKUK ii.

1 Thus your ministers watch unto prayer to God for your souls.

* The Lord accepts no service either of humility from those who are proud of heart towards their fellow-creatures, or of honour from him who scorneth the simple, or of duty from them who oppress or defraud their neighbour. His eye is upon the unjust balance, as well as upon the unbelieving heart-upon the unjust worshipper, as upon the despiser of

Behold, his soul which is lifted up is not upright in him but the just shall live by his faith. Yea also, because he transgresseth by wine, he is a proud man, neither keepeth at home, who enlargeth his desire as hell, and is as death, and cannot be satisfied, but gathereth unto him all nations, and heapeth unto him all people: shall not all these take up a parable against him, and a taunting proverb against him, and say, Woe to him that increaseth that which is not his! how long? and to him that ladeth himself with thick clay! Shall they not rise up suddenly that shall bite thee, and awake that shall vex thee, and thou shalt be for booties unto them? Because thou hast spoiled many nations, all the remnant of the people shall spoil thee; because of men's blood, and for the violence of the land, of the city, and of all that dwell therein. Woe to him that coveteth an evil covetousness to his house, that he may set his nest on high, that he may be delivered from the power of evil! Thou hast consulted shame to thy house by cutting off many people, and hast sinned against thy soul. For the stone shall cry out of the wall, and the beam out of the timber shall answer it.

5 The ambition of Chaldea was ever insatiable of empire. O Reader! guard thine own heart. Be not ambitious of greatness among thy fellow-creatures. He that is least in the Gospel kingdom, the same shall be great in the kingdom of heaven.

9 Covetousness is idolatry. Avarice is as wretched as it is wicked. It pines amid plenty: ungrateful to God, uncharitable towards man*.

12 God's anger is against cruelty; whether in a nation as the Babylonians, or in any individual. Special.

* Avoid thinking that when rich, no harm can reach you. That is to build a Babel tower, and to call down upon yourself God's just vengeance. It often happens that when men have heaped up all the wealth which they hope "will deliver them from the power of evil," then, sickness, sorrow, or death come, and all their fond hopes perish.

19 If idolatry be a woful sin, it is also a base and woful folly; well deserving the reproof of scorn.

Arise, it shall teach! Behold, it is laid over with gold and

silver, and there is no breath at all in the midst of it. 20 But the LORD is in his holy temple: let all the earth keep silence before him.

20 The whole creation is the Lord's temple. He is present there; He is present here for thy comfort, as thou art reading these pages; and he will be present for thy protection, when again, thou must mingle in a world where sin and sorrow range.

thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding: yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding; if thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures; then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God.
