Plunge the destroyers in the pit

That their own hands have made.
4 Let fogs and darknefs hide their way,
And flippery be their ground;

Thy wrath fhall make their lives a prey,
And all their rage confound.

5 They fly like chaff before the wind,
Before thine angry breath;
The angel of the Lord behind
Purfues them down to death.

6 They love the road that leads to hell;
Then let the rebels die,
Whofe malice is implacable

Against the Lord on high.

7 But if thou haft a chofen few
Amongst that impious race,
Divide them from the bloody crew,
By thy furprising grace.

8 Then will I raife my tuneful voice,
To make thy wonders known:
In their falvation I'll rejoice,
And bless thee for my own.

PSALM XXXV. 2d Part. Com. Metre. [*]

Ver. 12-14.

1

Love to enemies; or, the love of

Chrift to finners typified in David.
EHOLD! the love, the generous love,
That holy David fhows;

ВЕ

Hark, how his founding bowels move
To his afflicted foes!

2 When they are fick, his foul complains,
And feems to feel the fmart;
The fpirit of the gospel reigns,
And melts his pious heart.

3 How did his flowing tears condole,
As for a brother dead!
And fafting mortify'd his foul,

While for their life he pray'd.

4 They groan'd, and curs'd him on their bed;
Yet ftill he pleads and mourns;

And double bleffings on his head
The righteous God returns.

5 O glorious type of heavenly grace!
Thus Chrift the Lord appears :
While finners curfe, the Saviour prays,
And pities them with tears.

6 He, the true David, Ifrael's king,
Bleft and belov'd of God,
To fave us rebels, dead in fin,
Paid his own dearest blood.

PSALM XXXVI. Long Metre. [*] Ver. 5-9. The perfections and providence of God; or, general providence and special grace. HIGH in the heavens, eternal God!

1

Thy goodness in full glory fhines;
Thy truth fhall break through every cloud
That veils and darkens thy defigns.
2 Forever firm thy juftice ftands,
As mountains their foundations keep;
Wife are the wonders of thy hands;
Thy judgments are a mighty deep.
8 Thy providence is kind and large,
Both man and beaft thy bounty fhare;
The whole creation is thy charge,
But faints are thy peculiar care.
4 My God! how excellent thy grace,
Whence all our hope and comfort fprings!
The fons of Adam in diftrefs

Fly to the fhadow of thy wings.

5 From the provifions of thy houfe
We fhall be fed with fweet repaft;
There mercy, like a river, flows,
And brings falvation to our taste.
6 Life, like a fountain, rich and free,
Springs from the prefence of my Lord;
And in thy light our fouls fhall fee
The glories promis'd in thy word.

PSALM XXXVI. Common Metre. [*] Ver. 1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 9: Practical atheism expofed; or, the being and attributes of God afferted.

men grow bold in wicked ways,

'WHILE
And yet a God they own,

My heart within me often fays,
"Their thoughts believe there's none."

2 Their thoughts and ways at once declare, (Whate'er their lips profefs)

"God hath no wrath for them to fear, "Nor will they feek his grace."

3 What ftrange felf-flattery blinds their eyes!
But there's a haftening hour,

When they fhall fee, with fore furprife,
The terrors of thy power.

4 Thy juftice fhall maintain its throne,
Though mountains melt away;
Thy judgments are a world unknown,
A deep unfathom'd fea.

5 Above these heavens' created rounds,
Thy mercies, Lord, extend;

Thy truth outlives the narrow bounds,
Where time and nature end.

6 Safety to man thy godnefs brings,
Nor overlooks the beaft:
Beneath the fhadow of thy wings
Thy children choose to reft.

7 [From thee, when creature ftreams run low,
And mortal comforts die,
Perpetual fprings of life fhall flow,

And raife our pleasures high.

8 Though all created light decay,
And death clofe up our eyes,
Thy prefence makes eternal day,
Where clouds can never rife.

PSALM XXXVI. Short Metre. [b] Ver. 1-7. The wickedness of man, and the majesty of God; or, practical atheism expofed.

1

WHEN man grows bold in fin,

WHE

My heart within me cries,

"He hath no faith of God within, "Nor fear before his eyes."

2 [He walks a while conceal'd In a felf-flattering dream,

3

Till his dark crimes, at once reveal'd,
Expofe his hateful name.]

His heart is falfe and foul,

His words are fmooth and fair;

Wifdom is banifh'd from his foul,

And leaves no goodness there.
