3 [Again they climb the watery hills,
And plunge in deeps again:
Each like a tottering drunkard reels,
And finds his courage vain.
4 Frighted to hear the tempeft roar,
They pant with fluttering breath;
And, hopeless of a diftant fhore,
Expect immediate death.]

5 Then to the Lord they raife their cries,
He hears their loud request,
And orders filence through the skies,
And lays the floods to reft.

6 Sailors rejoice to lofe their fears,
And fee the form allay'd:

Now to their eyes the port appears;
There let their vows be paid.

7 'Tis God that brings them safe to land;
Let ftupid mortals know

That waves are under his command,
And all the winds that blow.

8 that the fons of men would praise
The goodness of the Lord!

And thofe that fee thy wondrous ways,
Thy wondrous love record.

PSALM CVII. Laft Part. Long Metre. [*] Colonies planted; or, nations blessed and punished. A Pfalm for New-England.

WHE

HEN God, provok'd with daring crimes,
Scourges the madnefs of the times,

He turns their fields to barren fand,

And dries the rivers from the land.

2 His word can raife the fprings again,
And make the wither'd mountains green,
Send fhowery bleffings from the fkies,
And harvests in the defart rife.

8 [Where nothing dwelt but beasts of prey,
Or men as fierce and wild as they,
He bids th' opprefs'd and poor repair,
And builds them towns and cities there.
4 They fow the fields, and trees they plant,
Whofe yearly fruits fupply their want:
Their race grows up from fruitful stocks,
Their wealth increafes with their flocks.

е

5 Thus they are bleft: but if they fin,
He lets the heathen nations in;
A favage crew invades their lands,
Their children die by barbarous hands.
6 Their captive fons, expos'd to fcorn,
Wander unpitied and forlorn;

The country lies unfenc'd, untill'd,
And defolation fpreads the field.
7 Yet if the humbled nation mourns,
Again his dreadful hand he turns ;
Again he makes their cities thrive,
And bids the dying churches live.]
8 The righteous with a joyful fenfe,
Admire the works of providence;
And tongues of atheifts fhall no more
Blafpheme the God that faints adore.
9 How few with pious care record
Thefe wondrous dealings of the Lord!
But wife obfervers ftill fhall find
The Lord is holy, juft, and kind.

PSALM CIX. Common Metre.

[b] Ver. 1-5, 31. Love to enemies, from the example of

G

Christ.

OD of my mercy and my praise,
Thy glory is my fong,

Though finners fpeak againft thy grace
With a blafpheming tongue.

2 When in the form of mortal man
Thy Son on earth was found,
With cruel flanders, falfe and vain,
They compafs'd him around.

3 Their miferics his compaffion move,
Their peace he ftill purfu'd;
They render hatred for his love,
And evil for his good.

4 Their malice rag'd without a cause;
Yet with his dying breath

He pray'd for murderers on his crofs,
And blefs'd his foes in death.

5 Lord, hall thy bright example fhine
In vain before mine eyes?

Give me a foul a-kin to thine,
To love mine enemies.

6 The Lord fhall on my fide engage,
And in my Saviour's name

I fhall defeat their pride and rage,
Who flander and condemn.

5 Through the whole earth his reign fhall spread, And crufh the powers that dare rebel;

Then fhall he judge the rifing dead,
And fend the guilty world to hell.
6 Though while he treads his glorious way,
He drinks the cup of tears and blood,
The fufferings of that dreadful day
Shall but advance him near to God.

JESUS, our Lord, afcend thy throne,

And near thy Father fit:

In Zion fhall thy power be known,
And make thy foes fubmit.

2 What wonders fhall thy gofpel do!
Thy converts fhall furpafs

The numerous drops of morning dew, And own thy fovereign grace. 3 God hath pronounc'd a firm decree, Nor changes what he fwore; "Eternal fhall thy priesthood be, "When Aaron is no more. "Melchizedek, that wondrous prieft, "That king of high degree,

"That holy man, who Abrah'm bleft, Was but a type of thee."

5 Jefus our priest forever lives
To plead for us above;
Jefus our king forever gives
The bleffings of his love.

6 God fhall exalt his glorious head,
And his high throne maintain;
Shall frike the powers and princes dead
Who dare oppofe his reign.

PSALM CXI. 1ft Part. Com. Metre. [x]

The wisdom of God in his works.
ONGS of immortal praife belong

SON

To my almighty God;

He has my heart, and he my tongue,

To fpread his name abroad.

How great the works his hand hath wrought!

How glorious in our fight!

Good men in every age have fought

His wonders with delight.

3 How most exact is nature's frame!
How wife th' Eternal Mind!

His counfels never change the scheme
That his first thoughts defign'd.

4 When he redeem'd his chofen fons,
He fix'd his covenant fure :
The orders that his lips pronounce,
To endless years endure.

5 Nature and time, and earth and fkies,
Thy heavenly skill proclaim;
What fhall we do to make us wife,
But learn to read thy name?

6 To fear thy power, to truft thy grace,
Is our divinest skill;

And he's the wifeft of our race,

That beft obeys thy will.

The perfections of God.

REAT is the Lord; his works of might
Demand our nobleft fongs:

Let his affembled faints unite

Their harmony of tongues.

2 Great is the mercy of the Lord,
He gives his children food;
And, ever mindful of his word,
He makes his promife good.
3 His Son, the great Redeemer, came
To feal his covenant fure;
Holy and reverend is his name,
His ways are just and pure.

Muft with his fear begin,
