EXPLANATION OF THE SYSTEM OF CHANTING. A single chant is divided into two portions, the former containing four notes, and the latter six notes. The first note in each division is called the chanting note, and is held for a space of time, varying according to the length of the verse, so as to admit of the words which are to be sung to it, however numerous, being deliberately pronounced. The remaining notes in each division of the chant are sung in strict time; the 2nd and 4th notes in the former division, and the 2nd, 4th, and 6th notes in the latter division, being accented. Each verse of the Psalms, Te Deum, and other Hymns in the Book of Common Prayer, is divided by a colon (:) into two portions corresponding to the two divisions of a chant; and in the following work these portions are subdivided by means of a dash (-), viz: the former portion into four parts, and the latter portion into six parts, answering to the notes in the two divisions of the chant. Where any word is followed by two or more dashes, it is to be sung to a corresponding number of notes in music;—and the same rule applies where a word or syllable is divided by one or more dashes. A double or quadruple chant consists merely, as its term implies, of two or four single chants. MORNING PRAYER. After the words, "The Lord's Name be praised," shall be said or sung this Psalm following: except on Easter-Day, upon which another Anthem is appointed; and on the Nineteenth day of every month it is not to be read here, but in the ordinary Course of the Psalms.
