וַיִּרְא בִּלְעָם כִּי טוֹב בְּעֵינֵי יְהוָה לְבָרֵךְ אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵל וְלֹא־הָלֵךְ כְּפַעַם־בְּפַעַם לִקְרַאת נָחָשִׁים וַיָּשֶׁת אֶל־־ הַמִּדְבָּר פָּנָיו : 2 וַיִּשָּׂא בִלְעָם אֶת-עֵינָיו וַיַּרְא אֶת־ יִשְׂרָאֵל שׁכֵן לִשְׁבָטֶיו וַתְּהִי עָלָיו רוּחַ אֱלֹהִים: 3 וַיִּשָּׂא מְשָׁלָו וַיֹּאמַר נְאֻם בִּלְעָם בְּנָוֹ בְרֹר וּנְאֵם הַעֲבֵר שְׁתֶם הָעֶיִן : 4 נְאָם שׁמֵעַ אִמְרֵי־אֵל אֲשֶׁר מַחֲזֶה שָׁדַי יִחה נֹפַל וּגְלְוּי עֵינָיִם: 5 מַה־טבוּ אֹהָלֶיךְ יעקב מִשְׁכְּנֹתֶיךָ יִשְׂרָאֵל: 6 כִּנְחָלִים נִסָּיוּ כְּגַת עַלִי נָהָר בַּאֲהָלִים נָטַע יְהוָה בַּאֲרָזִיִם עֲלֵי־מָיִם: 7 יול־מַיִם מִדָּלְיָן וְזַרְעוֹ בְּמַיִם רַבִּים וְיָרָם מֵאֲנַג מַלְכּוֹ וְתְנַשָׂא מַלְכָתְוֹ: 8 אֵל מְוֹצִיאוֹ מִמִּצְרַיִם כְּתוֹעֲפַת רְאֵם לְוֹ יאכל גוֹיִם צָרָיו וְעַצְמְתֵיהֶם וְנָרֵם וְחִדָּיו יִמְחַץ : 9 כָּרַע שָׁכַב כַּאֲרִי וּכְלָבִיא מִי יְקִימֶנּוּ מְבָרַכִיךְ בָרוּךְ וְאֹרַרֵיךְ אָרְוּר: 10 וַיִּחַר־־אַף בָּלָק אֶל-בִּלְעָם וַיִּסְפָּק אֶת־כַּפָּיו וַיֹּאמֶר בָּלָק אֶל־בְּלְעָם לָקַב אִיְבַי קְרָאתִיךְ וְהִנֵּה בֵּרַכְתָּ בָרֵךְ זֶה שָׁלֹשׁ פְּעָמִים: 11 וְעַתָּה בְּרַח־לְךְ אֶל־מְקוֹמֵךְ אָמַרְתִּי כַּבֵּד אֲכַבֶּרְךְ וְהִנֵּה מְנָעֵךְ יְהוָה מִכָּבוֹד: 12 וַיֹּאמֶר בִּלְעָם אֶל־בָּלָק הֲלֹא גַם אֶל־מַלְאָכִיךְ אֲשֶׁר־שָׁלַחְתָּ אֵלַי דִּבַּרְתִּי לֵאמֹר: 13 אִם־־יִתֶּן־לִי בָלָק מְלֹא בֵיתוֹ כֶּסֶף וְזָהָב לְא אוּכַל

לַעֲבֹר אֶת־פִּי יְהוָה לַעֲשׂוֹת טוֹבָה אוֹ רָעָה מִלִבִּי אֲשֶׁר־ שביעי יְדַבֵּר יְהוָה אֹתוֹ אֲדַבֵּר: 14 וְעַתָּה הִנְנִי הוֹלֵךְ לְעַמִּי

Having mentioned their noble descent, he proceeds to explain the glory of their latter times thus : Lo, the people that sball dwell alone, and shall not be reckoned among the nations.
