to judge, and UX denotes to right: therefore Asher offered after Dan, in order to shew, that a judge ought to act uprightly; as observed, Isaiah, chap. i. ver. 17. “ Seek judgment, righten the oppressed.” And Naphtali followed Asher, because when Jacob blessed them, ke thus arranged them, Asher before Naphtali; they therefore offered in the same order.

According to this expression, it would seem as if all the offerings were offered in one day ; whereas the dedication continued twelve days; to which it may be answered, that the expression is used to shew that they were equally acceptable to God, and that there was no distinction, in that they offered on different days; but was accounted as if they had all offered on one day. And it was for this reason that their offerings were equal, so that one could not carry it above another, by priding himself that bis offering was more valuable than anothers. And there were seven sorts of which they brought one each ; as the chargers, the silver bowls, the golden spoons, the bullocks, the

rams, the lambs, and the kids of the he-goats; and which made twelve of a sort, these some observe, were against the seven following things, viz.the twelve signs of the Zodiác, the twelve solar months, the twelve lunar months, the twelve tribes, the twelve princes, the twelve guverning passions of the soul, and the twelve loaves on the shew-bread table.

Ephraim was, that as the Shechipah, or divine presence, rested on the tabernacle of Shiloh, which was in the inheritance of the sons of Joseph, so did it afterwards rest in the Temple, which was in the inheritance of Benjamin. And thus the Psalmist observes, Psalm, lxxviii. ver. 67. “ Moreover, he refused the tabernacle of Joseph.” And as Moses observes, Deut. chap. xxxiii. ver. 12. “ And of Benjamin he said, The beloved of the Lord shall dwell in safety by him: and the Lord shall cover him all the day long, and he shall dwell between his shoulders." It is also observed, Psalm, 1xxx. ver, .

“Before Ephraim, Benjamin and Manasseh, stir up thy strength, and come and save us." And the tenth day the prince of the tribe of Dan, after whom followed the princes of the tribes of Asher and Naphtali : and it may be proper to inquire why Dan preceded those two tribes ? to this it may be answered, that as his father likened bim to Judah, as may be observed by the blessing of Jacob; Genesis, chap. xlix. ver. 16. : “Dan shall judge his people, as one of the tribes of Israel.” The chiefest tribe, which is Judah ; he was therefore considered as the principal of the semaining tribes, as Judah was of the whole: On the eleventh day the prince of the tribe of Asher, offered; the reason of his following Dan, is observed in Medrash, because 17 in Hebrew, denotes 18

* On the seventh day, the prince of the tribe of Ephraim offered : and which, as some observe, was in allusion to the seventh day, as being the sabbath, and to intimate thereby that Joshua, who was descended from that tribe, would on the sabbath take Jericho” in a miraculous manner, and would for that reason devote it as holy to the Lord; as mentioned, Joshua, chap. vi. ver. 17. “ And the city shall be devoted, even it and all that are therein, unto the Lord;" for as the sabbath was holy unto the Lord so was it to be also. After him followed Manasseh, in like order as Simeon followed Reuben, they being reckoned in the same degree, as may be observed from the words of Jacob to Josepb, Genesis, chap. xlviii. ver. 5. « And now thy two sons, Ephraim and Manasseh, which were born unto thee in the land of Egypt, before I came unto thee into Egypt, are mine, as Reuben and Simeon they shall be mine." Also, because that Joseph kept the seventh commandment" Thou shalt not commit adultery :” also the eighth, “ Thou shalt not steal"for he would not commit adultery with his master's wife, nor rob him of his dearest property, it was for this reason that his two sons offered on the seventh and eighth days. And after them, on the ninth day, offered the prince of the tribe of Benjamin; the reason of his following Manasseh and
