This expression may be objected to as superfluous, because it bath already been mentioned, in chap. i. ver. 46. to which Rabbi Bechaga answers, that the reason of its being mentioned a second time was 'to point out a most wonderful thing, viz. that from the time of their being numbered till the time of their departure, (which was 'twenty days) not one of all that great number died.

* Numerous commentators bave started an objection to this expression (although the English translation does not make the distinction, for by all the tribes' it mentions 325, of the children whereas by. Naphtali it says, "99, the children, without the prefix 5. To which, Rabbi Becaya answers, tbat the tribe of Naphtali, differed from all the other tribes in this—that whereas, all the others were more numerous in males thap females, he was more numerous in females than males; and which he observes is alluded to in the blessing Jacob gave to this tribe, by making use of the feminine noun ab* a hind. For which reason be- says nga is used, and which denotes as selecting the sons from among the daughters, this appears to be the best solution for the omission of the prefix letter.

This seems to explain the preceding verse, where it says, “ Only thou shalt not'number the tribe of Levi," thou shalt not number tbem among the children of Israel-not on account of their inferiority, but on the contrary for the dignity of their employment, which is their being made choice of by me for the service of the tabernacle; as mentioned verse 51." And wben the tabernacle setteth forward, the Levites shall cake it down, &c. And the stranger that cometh nigh shall be put to death. Hence we may perceive the dignity of this tribe, which was the reason that they were not to be numbered among the other tribes. It is observed in the Medrash, that onna denotes, the token
