לְעָד לְמָכִיר בֶּן־־מְנַשֶׁה וַיֵּשֶׁב בָּהּ : 41 וְיָאִיר בֶּן־ מְנַשֶׁה הָלַךְ וַיִּלְכֹּד אֶת־חַנְתֵיהֶם וַיִּקְרָא אֶתְהֶן חַת יָאִיר : 42 וְנָבַח הָלַךְ וַיִּלְכֹּד אֶת־־קְנָת וְאֶת־־בְּנֹתֶיהָ

לְצִבְאֹתָם בְּיַד־מֹשֶׁה וְאַהֲרן : 2 וַיִּכְתּב משֶׁה אֶת־מוצאֵיהֶם לְמַסְעֵיהֶם עַל־פי יְהוָה וְאֵלֶּה מַסְעֵיהֶם לְמוֹצָאֵיהֶם: 3 וַיִּסְעוּ מֵרַעַמְסֵס בַּחֹדֶשׁ הָרִאשׁוֹן בַּחֲמִשָּׁה עָשָׂר יוֹם לַחֹדֶשׁ הָרִאשׁוֹן מִמָּחֶרֶת הַפֶּתַח יָצְאוּ בְטִ

אֶל בְּיָד רָמָה לְעֵינֵי כָּל־מִצְרָיִם: 4 וּמִצְרַיִם מְקַבְּרִים אֵת אֲשֶׁר הִכָּה יְהוָה בָּהֶם כָּל־־בְּכוֹר וּבֵאלֹהֵיהֶם עָשָׂה יְהוָה שְׁפָטִים: 5 וַיִּסְעוּ בְנֵי-יִשְׂרָאֵל מֵרַעַמְסֵס וַיַּחֲנוּ בְּסִבָּת: 6 וַיִּסְעוּ מִסְכֹּת וַיִּחַנְוּ בְאֵתָם אֲשֶׁר בִּקְצֵה הַמִּדְבָּר: 7 וַיִּסְעוּ מֵאֵתָם וַיָּשָׁב עַל־פִּי הַחִיוֹת אֲשֶׁר עַל־־פְּנֵי בַּעַל צְפוֹן וַחֲנוּ לִפְנֵי מִנְדְל : 8 וַיִסְעוּ מִפְּנֵי הַחִידֹת וַיַּעַבְרְוּ בְתוֹךְ־הַיָּם הַמִּדְבָּרָה וַיֵּלְכוּדֶרֶךְ שְׁלֹשֶׁת יָמִים בְּמִדְבַּר אֵהָם וַיַּחֲנוּ בְּמָרֶה: 9 וַיִּסְעוּ מִמָּלָה

וַיָּבִאוּ אֵילָמָה וּבְאֵילִם שְׁתֵּים עֶשְׂרֵה עֵינַת מַיִם וְשִׁבְעִים שני תְּמָרִים וַיַּחֲנוּ־שָׁם: 10 וַיִּסְעוּ מֵאֵילִם וַיַּחֲנוּ עַל־יַם־ קיף :

וַיִּסְעוּ מִיַם־סוּף וַיַּחֲנוּ בְּמִדְבַּר סִין: 12 וַיִּסְעוּ

This means that they shall force them to go against the common enemy; which, though it is not expressed, out of respect to them, yet it must be so understood ; for, otherwise, it appears as if they were to have a possession in the land, among their brethren, alihough they were to si: still.

יִשְׂרָאֵל אִישׁ נָחֲלָתְוֹ: 19 כִּי לֹא נִנְחַל אִתָּם מֵעֵבֶר לירדן וָהָלְאָה כִּי בָאָה נַחֲלָתֵנוּ אֵלֵינוּ מֵעֵבֶר הַיַּרְבֵּן

מִזְרָחָה : שביעי 20 וַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵיהֶם משֶׁה אִתָּ־תַּעֲשׂוּן אֶת־הַדָּבָר הַזֶּה

אִם־תֵּחָלְצוּ לִפְנֵי יְהוָה לַמִּלְחָמָה : 21 וְעָבַר לָכֶם כָּל־חָלָוּץ אֶת־הַיַּרְבֵּן לִפְנֵי יְהוָה עַד הִוֹרִישָׁוֹ אֶת־אֹיְבָיו מִפָּנָיו : 22 וְנִכְבְּשָׁה הָאָרֶץ לִפְנֵי יְהוָה וְאַחַר תָּשָׁבוּ וְהָיִיפֶס נְקִים מֵיְהוָה וּמִיִּשְׂרָאֵל וְהָיְתָה הָאָרֶץ הַזאת לָכֶבֶ לַאֲחָזָה לִפְנֵי יְהוָה : 23

23 וְאִם־־לֹא תַעֲשׂוּן כֵּן הִנֵּה חֲטָאתֶם לַיהוָה וּדְעוּ חַטָאתְכֶם אֲשֶׁר תִּמְצָא אֶתְכֶס : 24 בְּנָוּ-לָכֶם עֶרִים לְטַפְּכֶם וּנְרֵרַת לְצְרַאֲכֶם וְהַיָּצֵא מִפִּיכֶם תַּעֲשׂוּ : 25 וַיֹּאמֶר בְּנֵי־נָד וּבְנֵי רְאוּבֵן אֶל־מֹשֶׁה לֵאמֹר עֲבָדֶיךְ יַעֲשׂוּ כַּאֲשֶׁר אֲדֹנִי מְצַוּה: 26 טֶפֶנוּ נָשִׁינוּ מִקְנֵנוּ וְכָל־־בְּהֶמְתֵּנוּ יִהְיוּ־שָׁם בְּעָרֵי הַגִּלְעָר: 27 וַעֲבָדֶיךְ יַעַבְרוּ כָּל־חֲלִיץ צְבָא לִפְנֵי יְהוָה לַמִּלְחָמָה כַּאֲשֶׁר אֲדֹנִי רֹבֶר : 28 וַיְצַו לָהֶם מֹשֶׁה אֶת אֶלְעָזָר הַכֹּהֵן וְאֵת יְהוֹשֻׁעַ בִּן־נוּן וְאֶת־רָאשֵׁי אֲרָוֹת הַמַפּוֹת לִבְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל : 29 וַיֹּאמֶר משֶׁה אֲלֵהֶם אִם־ יַעַבְרוּ בְנֵי־גֶד וּבְנֵי רְאוּבֵן אִתְּכֶם אֶת־הַיַּרְבֵּן כָּל־ חָלָוּץ לַמִּלְחָמָה לִפְנֵי יְהוָה וְנִכְבְּשָׁה הָאָרֶץ לִפְנֵיכֶם וּנְתַתֶּם לָהֶם אֶת־אֶרֶץ הַגִּלְעָר לַאֲחנָּה : 30 וְאִם־לֹא יַעַבְרֶוּ חֲלוּצִים אִתְּכֶם וְנָאחֲזוּ בְּתִכְכֶס בְּאֶרֶץ כְּנָעַן :

וַיַּעַנְוּ בְנֵי-גָד וּבְנֵי רְאוּבֵן לֵאמֹר אֵת אֲשֶׁר דִּבֶּר יְהוָה אֶל־עֲבָדֶיךְ בֶּן גַעֲשֶׂה: 32 נַחְנוּנַעֲבָר חֲלוּצִים לִפְנֵי יְהוָה אֶרֶץ כְּנָעַן וְאִתָּנוּ אֲחוֹת נַחֲלָתֵנוּ מֵעֵבֶר לַיַּרְבֵּן: 33 ויתן לָהֶם משֶׁה לִבְנֵי־גָד וְלִבְנֵי רְאוּבֵן וְלַחֲצִי שֵׁבֶטימְנַשֶׁה בֶן־יוֹסֵף אֶת־מַמְלֶכֶת סִיחן מֶלֶךְ הָאֱמרִי וְאֶת־מַמְלֶכֶת עוֹג מֶלֶךְ הַבָּשָׁן הָאָרֶץ לְעָרִיק בַּנְבְלֹת עָרֵי הָאָרֶץ סְבִיב: 34 וַיִּבְנָוּ בְנֵי--גָד אֶת־דִּיבְן וְאֶת-עֲטֶרֶת וְאֵת עֲרֹעֶר :

So that the children of Israel may not say that ye have despised the land, and thereby attempted to rebel against the Lord, as the spies did : this is what he meant, by saying ye shall be guiltless before the Lord, and before Israel. And tbis appears to be the real state of the case, as we find by their answer in verse 25. “And the children of Gad,

5 וַיֹּאמְרוּ אִם־מָצָאנוּ חֵן בְּעֵינִיךְ יְתַן אֶת־הָאָרֶץ הַזֶּאת לָעֲבָדֶיךְ לַאֲחנָּה אַל־תַּעַבְרֵנוּ אֶת־

הַיַּרְבֵּן: 6 וַיֹּאמֶר משֶׁה לִבְנֵי־גֶד וְלִבְנֵי רְאוּבֵן הַאַחֵיכֶם תניאון יָבֹאוּ לַמִּלְחָמָה וְאַתֶּם תֵּשְׁבוּ פְה: 7 וְלָמָּה תְגַוֹאוּן

אֶת־לֵב בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל מֵעֲבֹר אֶל־הָאָרֶץ אֲשֶׁר־נָתַן לָהֶם יְהוָה: 8 כּה עָשׂוּ אֲבְתֵיכֶם בְּשָׁלְחִי אֹתָם מִקְרֵש בַּרְגַע לִרְאוֹת אֶת-הָאָרֶץ: 9 וַעֲלוּ עַד־נַחַל אֶשְׁכּול וַיִּרְאוּ אֶת־הָאָרֶץ וַיָּנִיאוּ אֶת־לֵב בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל לְבִלְתִּי--בא אֶל־הָאָרֶץ אֲשֶׁר־נָתַן לָהֶם יְהוָה: 10 וַיִּחַר-אַף יְהוָה בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא וַיִּשְׁבַע לֵאמֹר :

11 אם־יִרְאוּ הָאֲנָשִׁים הָעֹלִים מִמִּצְרַיִם מִבֶּן עֶשְׂרִים שָׁנָה וָמַעְלָה אֶת הָאֲדָמָה אֲשֶׁר נִשְׁבַּעְתִּי לְאַבְרָהָם לְיִצְחָק וּלְיעקב כִּי לֹא־מִלְאוּ אחרי : 12 בִּלְתִּי כָּלֵב בֶּן־יִפְנֶה הַקְנָזִי וִיהוֹשֵׁעַ בִּן־נֶוּן

מִלְאוּ אַחֲרֵי יְהוָה : 13 וַיִּחַר-אַף יְהוָה בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל וַיִנְעַס בַּמִּדְבָּר אַרְבָּעִים שָׁנָה עַר־תּם כָּל־הַרֹוֹר הָעטֶה הָרָע בְּעֵינֵי יְהוָה : 14 וְהִנֵּה קַמְתָּם תַּחַת אֲבָתֵיכֶם תַּרְבּוּת אֲנָשִׁים חַטָאִים לִסְפּוֹת עוֹד עַל חֲרִין אַף־יְהוָה אֶל־יִשְׂרָאֵל: 15 כִּי תְשׁוּבָן מֵאַחֲרָיו וְיָסַף עוֹד לְהַגִּיחוֹ בַּמִּדְבָּר וְשָׁחַתָּם לְכָל־הָעָם הַזֶּה : אֵלָיו וַיֹּאמְרוּ גִדְרֹת צָאן נִבְנֶה לְמִקְנֵנוּ פָּה וְעָרִים לְטַפֵנוּ : 17 וַאֲנַחְנוּ גַחֲלֵץ לֹשִׁים לִפְנֵי בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל עַד אֲשֶׁר אִם־ הֲבִיאֹנֶם אֶל־מְקוֹמָם וְיָשָׁב טַפָּנוּ בְּעָרֵי הַמִּבְצָר מִפְּנֵי יִשְׁבֵי הָאָרֶץ: 18 לֹא נָשָׁוּב אֶל־בָּתֵּינוּ עַד הִתְנַחֵל בְּנֵי
