PREFACE

In order to grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, the mind should be filled every morning with some spiritual truth, and then compelled to return to it as often as possible during the day. Hence the value of such a book as Morning Thoughts."

A star (*) and dagger (†) will be seen at the top of each page. The star indicates the Scripture to be read each morning before the meditation, and the dagger denotes the Scripture to be read in private during the day or at night. By reading the latter daily the whole of the Bible will be read during the year.

From childhood the writer has taken a peculiar delight in daily and consecutively reading the Holy Scriptures, by which means he has read the Bible through at least once every year from his youth. In January, 1896, he was led to commit to memory from his reading one text which specially impressed him each day, and was also led to write a brief meditation upon the same. When he began he had no thought of continuing the practice, but every morning as he read his portion at least one text would fix itself upon his mind and heart for the rest of the day, the result being that at the end of the year he found himself in possession of 366 " morning thoughts " (1896 being leap year). The writer looks upon these as the Holy Spirit's gift to him for that year. And now if the Lord is pleased to accept them again, and make them a means of blessing and inspiration to others, He alone shall have all the praise.
