(1) Though we grant this Text was not quoted by the Nicene Council against the Arians, and is not found in many antient Copies. Nay, tho we fhould grant that it was not originally in the Epistle of St. John, it is however a good Argument for the Doctrine of the Trinity. For,

If it was a Marginal Note, and so crepe into the Text, this however fhews it to have been the opinion of the most antient and primitive Christians, who put this Comment to che Text.

If they say this was put in by the Orthodox, it was done in Oppositi. on to Hereticks; and this was a sufficient Evidence of their firm belief . of the Doctrine of the Trinity then..

But if this Text was expung'd by the Arians, who, as St. Ambrose obferves of them, were remarkable for this sort of fraudulent Dealing with the Scriptures, then there was a great deal of Reason for resto ring of it.

Though it be not in some Copies, yet it is in others, and those very antient. And that which may give us a strong Presumption that it is genuine is, that it was quoted by St. Cyprian, a considerable Time before the Nicene Council : and before the Arian Herefie ran fo high, or that it was so much for the Interest of any Party either to insert or expunge it.

But however this be, we are sure the Scriprures with it are all of a Picce, and very conlistent with chemselves. For the Substance of this Text is plainly exprest in other Places, which they don't deny to be genuine. Dr. Brownc, now Lord Bihop of Corke, against Toland, pag. 56. Dr. Burner, the late learned and pious Bishop of Salisbury, in his Letter from Zurich, tells us in what antiene Manuscripts he found is, and in what it was wanting.

(1) Were I to give a Reason of my Belief of the Trinity, laying aside :ll affectation of hard Words, and abstruse Metaphysical Notions, I would lo it thus:

I am fully perfuaded of the Neceflity of a Revelation in general, in prder to all the Purposes of Virtue and Piety in this Life ; and I am con. vinced that those Revelations of the Things of another World, which tre made in the Gospel, have better Proofs of their Divinity than any o. ther whatsoever. They have such Testimonies of their coming from God, from Prophecies, and Miracles, and the agreeableness of the Doctrine therein contained, to our common Naţions, that if I use my Reason with the lame impartiality in these, that I do in other things, I must give my Affent to them...

In those Writings, I find this Proposition: , 'There are three that bear Record in Heaven, the Father, the Word, and the holy Ghofi, and these three are one.

From whence, and from many other Passages in the Scriptures, I find that there is a Distinction made in the Godhead, under these three Names of Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, which the Church hath exprest, altogether by the Word Trinity, and singly by the Word Person. And I think these Terms proper enough, to express all that we know of this Mystery. ; Now I find no account of the Manner and Nature of this Diftinétion in the holy Scriptures, any otherwise than that the Son was begotten, and that the holy Ghost comes from the Facher and the Son. I conclude there is something more than a meer nominal Distinction, because we are laid to be baptized in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Which must needs import fomething more than if that Commislicn had run thus: Go baptize all, Nations in the Name of Jehovah, and of Elohim, and of Adonai. And if there were not something more intended, than barely that they fould do it in the Name of God, this were a needless Tautology. VII .,

Again, I conclude that they are not three distint different Spirits; for then there muft be, three Gods, contrary to person and Scripture. From a.) which I infer, char there is in the Godlead something more than a
