and the holy Ghoft: and these three are one. 8. And there are three that bear witnefs in earth, the spirit, and the water, and the blood, and these three agree in one. 9. If we receive the witnefs of men, the witnefs of God is greater: for this is the witness of God, which he hath teftified of his Son. 10. He that believ eth on the Son of God, hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God," hath made him a liar, because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son. 11. And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life: and this life is in his Son. b He that hath the Son, hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God, hath not life. 13. These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of

Now,at the fame Time I make this Profeffion of my Faith,I allow I have not the leaft Knowledge how ftrict this Union is, nor how great the Di ftinction. It is as much beyond my Reafon, as the Glory of God is beyond my Sight; and any Man who ftrives to conceive it himfelf, or takes Pains to explain it to others, is guilty of fuch a folly, that I can't think of any Action in Nature extravagant enough to match it. If we faw a Man ftretching up his Hand with a great deal of Vehemence to pull down a Star, we fhould certainly conclude him diftracted; becaufe 'tis utterly impoffible for him to reach it, or grafp it if he could. 'Tis the very Cate of thofe Men, who go abour to account for the Manner of that Unity an Diftinction for which we have neither Words nor Idea's. Dr. Browne, now

(1) By the Sin unto Death, is meant probably, a total and malicious Apofacy from the Chriftian Faith to the Heathen Idolatry. For Ver. 18. Whosoever is born of God finneth not, that is, he does not commit that Sin of Apoftacy which the Apoftle is here fpeaking of. This Senfe is likewife confirm'd, ver.21. Little Children, keep your felves from idols. We have no warrant to hope that Prayers will be available for fuch without their Repentance. And though their Repentance may be difficult, yet if they do repent and return, I do not fee any thing in the New-Teftament which forbids their being received. See the Notes on Heb. 6. 4. and on Heb. 10. 15. Their Cafe is but little different from that of ApoPates, who live, and continue to live in known, open, and wilful Difobedience to the Laws of Chrift, and are deaf to all the Calls and Exhortati cns to Repentance.
