For the Promife that he fhould be the Heir of the World, was not to Abraham, or to his Seed through the Law, but through the righteousness of Faith. Rom. 8. 3. What the Law could not do, in that it was weak through the Flesh, God fending his own Son, in the Likeness of finful Flesh, and for Sin, [or, by a Sacrifice for Sin], condemned Sin in the Flefh. (1) By the Right confnefs of God, both here and elsewhere in the Epiftles of St. Paul, feems to be meant, God's Method of justifying, or pardoning the paft Sins both of Jews and Gentiles, (that is, the whole World) through Faith in the Merits and Blood of Chrift, which was shed for the Remiflion of Sins. This Method is revealed from Faith to Faith. The Meaning is, This Method, which was wholly unknown to the Gentiles, and but obfcurely made known to the Jews, is revealed in the Gofpel to be by Faith, and this in order to beget Faith in Men, or to perfuade them to believe in Chrift, it being the only Way whereby thofe to whom the Gofpel is preached, could obtain Salvation. Nor can any take Encouragement from hence to live wickedly; for Faith in Chrift includes the receiving him as a Prophet to teach, as a Priest to make Atonement,
