(1) Some have fancied that this and the following Verfes prove, that God, from all Eternity, decreed fome particular Perfons to Happiness, in fuch a Senfe, as neceffarily infers, that the much greater Part of Mankind are doomed to Mifery. But this Opinion is fo contrary to the natural Notions which God has impreffed of himself upon our Minds, and to many plain Texts of Scripture, [See the Note on Job. 10. 15.] that it cannot be admitted. The Purpofe of God with refpe to the Salvation of Man, feems to be his determining to fave in and through Jefus Chrift, all, who upon the Preaching of the Gofpel, fhould receive and embrace it, and comply with the Terms on which Salvation is offered, living a fober, righteous, and godly Life. (1) There are two Interpretations of thefe Expreffions, First-boru among many Brethren, first-born of every Creature, or of the whole Creation, &c. First, That our Lord was before all things, that he had a Being before any created Being; he was before all Creatures both in Duration and Dignity; for fo he muft of Neceffity be, if all things were created by him. Secondly, Thefe Expreflions may fignifie, that our bleffed Saviour is Heir and Lord of the whole Creation. The Greek Word, Col. 1. 18. and Rev. 3. 14. tranflated Beginning, is frequently ufed to fignifie the Principle and efficient Caufe, and then the Meaning of the former Place is, that our Lord is the Principle and efficient Cause of the Resurrection of the Dead; and of the latter, that he is the Principle and efficient Cause of the Creation, Arch-bifhop Tillotfon, in his firft Sermon on Joh. 1. 14. which was published, by himself, eftablishes thefe Interpretations, but he prefers the latter.
