of faith: 31. But Ifrael, which followed after the law of righteoufnels, • hath not attained to the law of righteoufnefs. 32. Wherefore? Because they fought it, not by faith, but as it were by the works of the law for they f ftum-. bled at that ftumbling-ftone; 33. As it is written, Behold, I lay in Sion a ftumbling-ftone, and rock of offence: and whofoever believeth on him, fhall not be afha med [Or, confounded].

for Ifrael is, that they might be faved. 2. For I bear them record, that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge. 3. For they being ignorant of Gods righteousness, and going about to eftablish their own righteoufnefs, have not fubmitted themselves unto the righteoufnefs of God. 4. For Chrift is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth. 5. For Mofes defcribeth the righteoufnefs which is of the law, d that the man which doth thofe things, fhall live by them. 6. But the righteoufnefs which is of faith, fpeaketh on this wife, Say not in thine heart, Who fhall afcend into heaven? (that is to bring Chrift down from above). 7. Or, Who fhall defcend into the deep? (that is to bring up Chrift again from the dead). 8. But what faith it? The f word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart:

(1) The Conditions of Salvation are not any where mentioned together, but fcattered up and down in feveral Places of the New-Teftament. In alĺ thofe Places therefore where only one or more of these Conditions are expreffed, there all the other are to be understood; or that which is expreffed is to be taken in fuch a large Sense as prefuppofes and includes all the other Conditions. Thus he who truly believes in Jefus Chrift, embraces his Doctrine, and fubmits to his Laws, which enjoin the other Conditions of Salvation. And therefore though Salvation feems here to be promifed to him who owns and confeffes Chrift Jefus, and believes: that God hath raifed him, from the Dead, yet this gives not the leaft encouragement to him who fhall negles or contemn his Laws, and prefume to live wickedly. Again, He that believeth and is baptized, shall be faved; but if a Man by wicked Works denies his Faith, and refufes to perform his Part of the Gofpel Covenant entred into at his Baptifm, he will be excluded the Kingdom of Heaven; becaufe the Unrighteous fhall not enter into it. Once more, it is faid, that He that giveth a Cup of cold Water to a Difciple, in the Name of a Difciple, fhall not lose his Reward; but a Perfon must be but ill inftructed in the Chriftian Religion, and willing to deceive himfelf, who can think that the Practice of one Duty, will make amends for the Omiffion of many, or for the Commiffion of any Sin which God has forbidden; for God hates Pride and Covetousness, and he will judge and condemn Whoremongers and Adulterers, and all fuch as prefume to live in the wilful Commiffion of Sin of any kind or fort. For all Luts and Sins, both of the Flesh and of the Spirit, war against the Soul, and without Repentance, and a Change of the Mind and Life, exclude the Guilty the Kingdom of Heaven.

How then fhall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how fhall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how fhall they hear " without a preacher? 15. And how fhall they preach, except they be fent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the golpel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things! 16. So then, faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. 18. But I fay, Have they not heard? Yes, verily, their found went into all the earth, and their words unto the ends of the world. 19.
