(1) This feems to have been done by a Power peculiar to the Apostles, and not the effect of a common A&t of Difcipline. Some of the best Expofitors are of Opinion, that fome bodily Diftemper was inflicted by the Devil on the Perfons who were put under this Sentence, For this Reafon it is called, Delivering unto Satan, who is ever ready to punish and torment Mankind. The Defign of God is, that the Perfons thus punished might be brought to Repentance; for the following Words are, for the deftruction of the Flesh, that the Spirit might be faved in the Day of the Lord Jefus; which the fuffering Perfon might be, on his true Repentance. I am inclined to think, that the remitting and retaining Sins, Joh. 20. 23. relates to this matter; and that what St. John 1 Epift. 5. 16. fays of the Sin unto Death, for which he would not fay the Church fhould pray, refpects those who were under this Cenfure. The Sins of fome were pro bably attended with fuch aggravating Circumftances, that no Prayers would avail for their being delivered from Temporal Death, though from eternal Punishments they might on their true Repentance be deliverta. n וון even Chrift our m paffover is facrificed [Or, flain] for us. 8. Therefore let us keep the feaft [Or, holy day] not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of fincerity and truth. 9. I wrote unto you in an epiftle, not to company with fornicators. 10. Yet not altogether with the fornicators of this world, or with the covetous, or extortioners, or with idolaters; for then muft ye needs go out of the world. 11. But now I have written unto you, (1) not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator,or covetous, or an idolater,or a railer,or a drunkard, or an extortioner, with fuch an one, no not to eat. 12. For what have I to do to judge them alfo that are withou? do not ye judge them that are within? 13. But them that are without, God judgeth.
