(1) The Apoftle here, oppofes our prefent State under the Gospel, to our future State in Heaven. In this State, even though the Light of the Gospel fhines upon us, the Truths therein contained are reprefented to us by Allufions and Figures borrowed from the things of this World. Thus the Joys of Heaven are reprefented by having Treafures, wearing Crowns, and being poffeffed of a Kingdom. But in Heaven, we fhall have a more immediate View of thofe delightful and transporting Objects, which now are reprefented to us by Images taken from thofe things which Men in this State have the greatest Thoughts of. Nor is there any inconfiftency with refpect to what the Apoftle fays here, and what he delivers in 2 Cor. 3. 18. For he does not fay that we have any other difcovery made of these things, in the Gofpel, than by Allufions, &c. from earthly things; but he speaks of the Clearnefs, the Certainty, the Defign of these things, and their Relation to us. So that we have greater Affurances of them now in the Gofpel, than those who lived under the Law.
