(1) Some think that this happened about the Year of our Lord 46, when the Apoftle was at Lyftra, Acts 14. 6.

(2) Various are the Opinions of Commentators about the Senfe of this Verfe, the chief of which are examined particularly by the Right Reverend Bishop Bull, in his English Works, Vol. I. pag. 188, &c. He has fhewn y many Arguments, That this Thorn in the Flesh could not be his Suferings and Perfecutions for the fake of the Gofpel, nor any inward Moion of original Sin, or the Reliques of it in the Apoftle, nor any incitement to Pride, or flefhly Lufts; but the Opinion he establishes is, That it was fome bodily Sickness, fome painful and troublesome Difeafe, which, rom its fharpnefs, is not unfitly called a Thorn. What Difeafe it was is not fo eafie to determine. Many are of opinion it was a very violent Head-ach, which this bleffed Apoftle frequently laboured under. It is lain, it was fome infirmity in his Body or Flefb. The Reafon why it is called a Messenger of Satan is, because probably it was inflicted by divine Permiffion by fome evil Angel; for it was an antient Opinion among the ews, that many Difeafes are without natural Caufes inflicted on Manind by evil Spirits. The Cafe of Job, Chap. 2. 6, 7. is a remarkable Intance, as is alfo that of the Woman who was cured by our Lord, the HiEory of which we have, Luk. 13. 11, &c.

Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in neceffities, in perfecutions, in diftreffes for Chrills fake for when I am weak, then am I ftrong. II. I am become a fool in glorying, ye have compelled me: for I ought to have been commended of you: for in nothing am I Behind the very chiefeft apoftles, though I be nothing. 12. For what is it wherein ye were inferior to other churches, except it be that I my felf was not P burdenfome to you? forgive me this wrong. 14.
