(1) It is very uncertain what Epiftle St. Paul here means. Dr. Mills nd Dr. Whitby think it to be the Epiftle to the Ephefians; but Dr. Lightot is of Opinion that it was an Epiftle which the Laodiceans fent to the poftle. And though it was not of equal Authority with St. Paul's own piftles, yet it was a good Copy and Example for the Coloffians to folw. Those who are not fatisfied with this, rather than fuppofe that ny of the Epiftles of the Apoftles are loft, he would have them underand it of the firft Epiftle of St. John, written by that Apoftle from Laocea; for he fays, St. Paul never was at that Place. See his Works, ol I. pag. 326, 339. But if we fhould fuppofe this Epiftle to be ritten by one of the Apostles, and that it is now loft, I do not fee ow the Canon of the holy Scriptures is affected thereby, fince there are as any of the Epiftles of the Apostles preferved by Divine Providence, and anfmitted down to us, as are abundantly fufficient to answer all the urpofes for which they were written. The Scripture Canon depends not much upon its having every Scrip and Letter which the Apoftles rit, as upon its having nothing in it but what was written by Men inired, as they were.

1OR your felves, brethren, know our a entrance in unto you, that it was not in vain. 2. But even after that we had fuffered before, and were fhamefully entreated, as ye know, at Philippi, we were bold in our God to peak unto you the gofpel of God with much contention. 3. For our exhortation was not of deceit, nor of uncleannefs, nor in guile: 4. But as we were allowed of God to be put in truft with the gofpel, even fo we fpeak, h not as pleafing men, but God, which trieth our hearts. 5.
