himfelf SAVED you out of all your Adverfities, and your Tribulations and you have faid unto him, Nay, but fet a King over us. Now therefore prefent yourselves before the LORD by your Tribes, and by your Thoufands.

20 And when Samuel had caufed all the Tribes of Ifrael to come near, the Tribe of Benjamin was taken.

21 When he had caused the Tribe of Benjamin to come near by their Families, the Family of Matri was taken, and Saul the Son of Kish was taken and when they fought him, he could not be found.

22 Therefore they enquired of the LORD further, if the Man fhould yet come thither: and the LORD answered, Behold, he hath hid himself among the Stuff.

23 And they ran and fetched him thence: and when he ftood among the People, he was higher than any of the People from his Shoulders and upwards.

24 And Samuel faid to all the People, See ye him whom the LORD hath chofen, that there is none like him among all the People? And all the People fhouted, and faid, GoD fave the King.

25 Then Samuel told the People the Manner of the Kingdom, and wrote it in a Book, and laid it up before the LORD.

26 And Saul went home to Gibeah, and there went with him a Band of Men, whofe Hearts GOD had touched.

27 But the Children of Belial faid, How fhall this Man fave us? And they defpifed him, and brought him no Prefents but he held his Peace.

CHA P. XII.

1 Samuel teftifieth his Integrity: 6 He reproveth the People of Ingratitude: 16 He terrifieth them with Thunder in Harveft-time, 20 and comforteth them in God's Mercy.

Ver.1

AND Samuel faid unto all Ifrael, Behold, I have

hearkned unto your Voice in all that ye faid unto me, and I have made a King over you.

2 And now behold, the King walketh before you and I am old, and gray-headed, and behold, my Sons are with you and I have walked before you from my Childhood unto this Day.

Aaa 2

3 Behold,

3 Behold, here I am, witnefs against me before the LORD, and before his Anointed: whofe Ox have I taken? or whofe Afs have I taken? or whom have I defrauded? whom have I oppreffed? or of whofe Hand have I received any BRIBE to BLIND mine EYES therewith? and I will reftore it you.

4 And they faid, Thou haft not defrauded us, nor oppreffed us, neither haft thou taken ought of any Man's Hand.

5 And he faid unto them, The LORD is Witness against you, and his Anointed is Witnefs this Day, that ye have not found ought in my Hand. And they anfwered, He is Witness.

6 And Samuel faid unto the People, It is the LORD that advanced MOSES and AARON, and that brought your Fathers up out of the Land of Egypt.

7 Now therefore ftand ftill, that I may reafon with you before the LORD of all the RIGHTEOUS ACTS of the LORD, which he did to you and to your Fathers.

8 When JACOB was come into Egypt, and your Fathers cried unto the LORD, then the LORD fent MOSES and AARON, which brought forth your Fathers out of Egypt, and made them dwell in this Place.

9 And when they forgat the LORD their GOD, he fold them into the Hand of Sifera, Captain of the Hoft of Hazor, and into the Hand of the Philistines, and into the Hand of the King of Moab, and they fought against them.

10 And they cried unto the LORD, and faid, We have finned, because we have forfaken the LORD, and have ferved Baalim and Afhtaroth: but now deliver us out of the Hand of our Enemies, and we will ferve thee.

11 And the LORD fent Jerubbaal, and Badan, and Jephthah, and Samuel, and delivered you out of the Hand of your Enemics on every fide, and ye dwelled fafe.

12 And when ye faw that Nabafh the King of the Children of Ammon came against you, ye faid unto me, Nay, but a King fhall reign over us; when the LORD your God was your KING.

13 Now therefore, behold the King whom ye have chofen, and whom ye have defired: and behold, the LORD hath fet a King over you.

14 If ye will FEAR the LORD, and SERVE him, and OBEY his VOICE, and not rebel against the Commandment

of

of the LORD, then fhall both ye, and alfo the King that reigneth over you, continue following the LORD your God.

15 But if ye will not OBEY the VOICE of the LORD, but rebel against the Commandment of the LORD, then shall the Hand of the LORD be against you, as it was against your Fathers.

16 Now therefore ftand and fee this great Thing which the LORD will do before your Eyes.

17 Is it not Wheat-harveft To-day? I will call unto the LORD, and he fhall fend Thunder and Rain: that ye may perceive and fee that your Wickedness is great, which ye have done in the fight of the LORD, in afking you a King.

18 So Samuel called unto the LORD, and the LORD fent THUNDER and Rain that Day: and all the People greatly FEARED the LORD and Samuel.

19 And all the People faid unto Samuel, Pray for thy Servants unto the LORD thy GOD, that we DIE not: for we have added unto all our Sins, this EVIL, to Ask us a KING.

• 20 And Samuel faid unto the People, Fear not: (ye have done all this Wickedness: yet turn not aside from following the LORD, but SERVE the LORD with ALL your HEART.

21 And turn ye not afide for then should ye go after vain Things, which cannot profit nor deliver, for they are vain.)

22 For the LORD will not FORSAKE his People, for his great NAME'S SAKE: because it hath pleafed the LORD to make you his People.

23 Moreover, as for me, GOD forbid that I should fin against the LORD, in CEASING TO PRAY for you: but I will teach you the good and the right Way.

24 Only fear the LORD, and SERVE HIM in TRUTH with ALL your HEART: for CONSIDER how GREAT Things he hath DONE for you.

25 But if ye shall ftill DO WICKEDLY, ye fhall be conSUMED, both YE and your KING.

Ver.1

TOW it came to pass upon a Day, that Jonathan the Son of Saul faid unto the young Man that bear his Armour, Come, and let us go over to the Philiftines Garison, that is on the other fide: but he told not his Father.

4 And between the Paffages by which Jonathan fought to go over unto the Philiftines Garifon, there was a sharp Rock on the one fide, and a fharp Rock on the other fide.

6 And Jonathan faid to the young Man that bare his Armour, Come, and let us go over to the Garison of thefe Uncircumcifed; it may be that the LORD will work for us for there is no Restraint to the LORD to fave by MANY or by FEW.

8 Jonathan faid, Behold, we will pass over unto these Men, and we will difcover ourfelves unto them.

9 If they fay thus unto us, Tarry until we come to you; then we will stand still in our Place, and will not go up unto them.

10 But if they fay thus, Come up unto us; then we will go up for the LORD hath delivered them into our Hand; and this fhall be a Sign unto us.

11 And both of them difcovered themselves unto the Garifon of the Philiftines and the Philiftines faid, Behold, the Hebrews come forth out of the Holes, where they had hid themselves.

12 And the Men of the Garifon anfwered Jonathan, and faid, Come up to us, and we will fhew you a Thing. And Jonathan faid unto his Armour-bearer, Come up after me; for the LORD hath DELIVERED them into the Hand of Ifrael.

13 And Jonathan climbed up upon his Hands, and upon his Feet, and his Armour-bearer after him and they fell before Jonathan; and his Armour-bearer flew after him.

14 And that firft Slaughter which Jonathan and his Armour-bearer made, was about twenty Men.

15 And there was trembling in the Hoft, and among all the People; and the EARTH QUAKED: fo it was a very great TREMBLING.

16 And the Watchmen of Saul looked; and behold, the Multitude melted away, and they went on beating down one another.

17 Then faid Saul, Number now, and fee who is gone from us. And when they had numbred, behold, Jonathan

and his Armour-bearer were not there.

18 And Saul faid unto Ahiah, Bring hither the Ark of GOD.

19 And it came to pass while Saul talked unto the Priest, that the Noife that was in the Hoft of the Philistines went on, and increased.

20 And Saul, and all the People came to the Battle: and behold, every Man's Sword was against his Fellow, and there was a very great Discomfiture.

21 Moreover, the Hebrews that were with the Philiftines before that Time, they alfo turned to be with the Ifraelites.

22 Likewife all the Men of Ifrael which had hid themfelves, when they heard that the Philiftines fled, even they alfo followed hard after them in the Battle.

23 So the LORD SAVED Ifrael that Day.

24 And the Men of Ifrael were diftreffed that Day: for Saul had adjured the People, faying, Curfed be the Man that eateth any Food until Evening, that I may be avenged on mine Enemies: fo none of the People tafted any Food.

25 And all they of the Land came to a Wood, and there was Honey upon the Ground.

26 But no Man put his Hand to his Mouth: for the People feared the Oath.

27 But Jonathan heard not when his Father charged the People with the Oath: wherefore he put forth the End of the Rod that was in his Hand, and dipt it in an Honeycomb, and put his Hand to his Mouth; and his Eyes were enlightned.

28 Then answered one of the People, and faid, Thy Father traitly charged the People with an Oath, faying, Curfed be the Man that eateth any Food this Day. And the People were faint.

29 Then faid Jonathan, My Father hath TROUBLED the Land: fee, I pray you, how mine Eyes have been enlightped, because I tasted a little of this Honey:
